What can one say - the entire concert was oozing with classicism. Nothing one writes about would be able to convey the anubhavam.

The swaras at kAshIragnIm were fantastic. Swaras were sung at kOmalamrudubhAshiNi, amba dEvi and dEvi. The mukhAri Alapana was sublime... It was such a wonderful feeling listening to pAhi mAm; the rich iconography of the kriti is testimony to Dikshitar's genius.

The viruttam was in nalinakAnti, hamIrkalyANI and khamAs followed by konji konji vA guhane in khamAs by Periyasamy Thooran.

The next item was Bharatiyar's ninnai sharaN aDaindEn in yamunAkalyANi.

The concert concluded with a shlOkam in madhyamAvati followed by a Jayadevar ashtapadi.

-------------------------------

You must be absolutely honest and true in the depicting of a totem for meaning is attached to every line. You must be most particular about detail and proportion.
- Emily Carr

Vocal : Vijay Siva
Violin : RK ShrirAmkumar
Mrudangam : the latest sangeetha kAlAnidhi Trichy Sankaran

Concert duration/Day : ~ 2 hours and 25 mins /Tuesday
Concert Type : Nirvana (open ended with no program to follow)/Ticketed
Sabha/Hall : IFAS/German Hall

01.srI nAthAdhi - mAyAmAlavagowla - Adi - D (NS@mAyA kArya kalanAhIno mAmaka sahasra kamalAsIno)
3 mins neraval and 3 mins swaras
02.lAvanya rAmA - pUrnashadjam - Adi - T

03. visAlAkshIm visvEshIm - kasiramakriya - M Capu? - D (RNS@kAsi rAgnIm kapAlinIm)
6 mins alApana and 4 mins violin return
neraval for 5 mins and swaras for 7 mins

04.nannu kanna thalli nA - sindukannadA - Adi - T

05. karunAnidhi ilalO - tOdi - Adi (tisra gati) - SS (RNS@kOmaLa mrdu bAshini)
11 mins alApana and 7 mins violin return
7 mins neraval and 9 mins swaras

Vijay is a musician who pays lot of attention to different languages and always spreading all popular languages (this time he misssed kannada , but there was telugu, sanskrit and thamizh). I went bit late ,but looks like the concert started with only shree nAthadi , the neraval and swaras were bit measured but nevertheless the brilliant sankaran sir(another reason to go) was settling well.

Poornashadjam passed without much excellence and as jigyaasa said the kasiramakriya(paNtuvarAli) was really good , he took a more conscious choice to sing more open throated sangathis reaching the more higher tara sthayi and I liked it , neraval and swaras were well done, neraval could have been a bit more.

nannu kanna thalli was good , nothing much to rave about and he moved on to tOdi. I have heard this tOdi number karunAnidhi ilAlO very less and his rendition was quite good , he lost a bit of energy in particular in swaras but overall it was well done.

The violinist RKSK was not that great in first half ,there was bit more press and did not give a great divine violin nAdham till then.

06.amba nIlAmbari - nIlAmbari - Adi - Ponniah Pillai

7A.pAhimAm ratnAchala - mukhAri - Adi - D (RS@pAhi mAm T)
11 mins alApana and forgot to note the violin return timing
10 mins swaras

7B. tani for 10 mins

8A. Viruththam had lines
... mathanamAda iRu KAthil (nalinakAnti) + vidamani charanavinDangaL (hameer kalyAni) + bAla muttu guruVE (khamAs) --> I am assuming this could be thirruppugazh, some one can correct it if it is not.

8B.konji konji vA guhane - khamAs -Periyasamy Thooran.

9.ninnai sharaN aDaindEn - yamunAkalyANi.- mahakavi Bharatiyar

10A. The concert concluded with a shlOkam in madhyamAvati
10B followed by a rAdhavarana - Jayadevar ashtapadi- madhyamAvati.

For me everything clicked from neelAmbari on. His rendition was really wonderful from konjal in neelAmbari and I liked sankaran sir's thoppi caressing more from neelAmbari on. Mukhari was splendid, perhaps the second best mukhari of this season . Atleast to me out of all contemporary singers vijay excels in mukhAri far more than many musicians . His voice and vidwat matched in mukhAri.Incidentally I and semmu86 were talking as he sang mukhAri alApana that he will go for endraikku sivakripai as he had already covered MD, T and SS krithis. But nevertheless pAhimAm ratnAchala is such a wonderful composition. I particular liked his swaras though short he did different shades with different ma mA (like sa ri mA mA , da sa da pa mA mA) and sankaran was matching well. Also RKSK was matching very well in the second half.

I do know vijay segments distinctly different languages and I do know post tani, few lovely missed languages tukkadas will be there . It was a dose of thamizh tukkadas. The first viruththam (assuming thiruppugazh) was well done particularly the nalinakanti start and PT's kONji kOnji was well done reinforcing his DKP/DKJ school.Vijay is a terrific yamunA kalyAni singer and he got the charm of bharathiYAR in ninnai sharan AdaindEn. He wrapped with a brief slokham and a rAdhA varana somewhat to my liking which is a jayadeva ashtapadi.

As told before , RKSK was more in his elements in the second half and he did provide great support . I remember there are quite a few VS-RKSK-TS combinations that I have attended particularly 2006 kalarasana where he sang a kAnadA rtp and kAMbOdhi main. Trichy Sankaran sir was not his super best yesterday, I guess it has to do with he not having upa pakkAvadhyam , the tani was not fireworks worthy but still quite satisfying. I just dont get as to why such a senior and brilliant mrudangist is not keeping upapakkavadhyam.

Few Cribs:
-------------
Apart from not having upapakkavAdhyam, I in general dont like transforming the CM to bhajana sampradAya finish. I just dont like VS taking cymbals(no to  jalrA ) and singing the last ashtapati, that crib was already told once in this forum .

The second crib is he can repeat attimes the lines twice in a slokham or viruththam .

The third crib is more to do with attendance which Shankar has said , I thought with TS accompanying did expect more (strength was only 200). Also yesterday many of big crowd pulling stars did not sing, so was expecting much more .

Overall vijay brings detail and proportion and as always pattandara suddham is omnipresent.Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours and 25 mins.
