Post by MV »

Where is the Sanjay fan brigade??? I made no Notes, I was sure there would be a few wanting e-space. I did my hear my Sanjay kutcheri this Season :D No fireworks, but had the Sanjay stamp of class all along.

I was there at the concert too... His voice was in had shape.. didn't make notes so can't remember the whole song list.. to be honest was particularly disappointed with his gimmicks in pallavi.. the concert had nothing in particular to be reviewed here.. one of his off days..

MV,
Surely, you remember a few of the vidvAn's classy pieces at least. I would have been there, had I stayed on in Chennai.

Shankarabharanam,
A song list (at least partial, perhaps?)
Almost end of season, most popular performers hit by sore throats, with an audience providing coughing accompaniments to them ;)

@jaysrikris: thanks for the song list..
@arasi: agreed... But what irks me many reviewers don't accept it and remain biased to couple of artists.. I liked his yamankalyani... But apart from that it was disappointing.. I believe season is a time when rarely you get to hear good quality concerts but variety is there.. hence I make it a point to attend most of the youngsters.. :).

Jaysriks,
Thanks for the list.

shankarabharanam,
That yamanA kalyANi, popularized by Maharajapuram Santhanam is a sweet song. Early this year Sanjay sang it at Bengaluru, as he did yesterday, with haridAsulu following en suite. Brimming with bhAvam and sung at a slow pace, this MD's moving kruti was topped by a joyous haridAasulu at a faster speed, making it a double delight.

Like you, I went to hear many young performers, singing in one hour to two hour slots. That really made it a true season for me

Arasi, couldn't forget the list. I would have put it in if Jaysriks hadn't. Thanks Jaysriks. Ok, he probably wasn't 100%. But, I maintain the standard always shows!!. Even RTP, he sang smartly. For eg, he sang KS in tisram and started the pallavi at the tisra eduppu to end on beat. No, I certainly wasn't disappointed. Do wish I had made it to some of the earlier marathons.

What is the funda behind two songs in the same raga in the same concert, back to back?? Innovation?? Anything seems acceptable to the audience these days!
Three songs would be a triple delight? :) Eka raga then can be Nirvana!

;)
If I remember correctly, a Braindrain's review did mention a triple-deck presentation of a rAgam by Sanjay.
The double-delight I heard appealed to me because it was well-constructed with contrasting details, as in architecture, and yet had a homogeneous feel to it.

I think the song after the viruttam was 'Thillai Stalam enru solla thodanginal'

Yes, a SAmA kruti after a SAmA viuttam. With all my overdose of concerts from morning till evening, my mind is replete with songs and I did register it as 'tillai sthalam' as I read it!

This was probably not Sanjay's best, although I did not have any problem with his singing or the choice of songs. I think the mood was disturbed right at the start with the audio system not functioning at all in the beginning and later for the entire varnam, was only partially working (and all along I thought my ears were blocked due to cold!!). Sanjay lost his cool and yelled at the person(s) managing the system and then proceeded from there. I got to hear the full version of 'Chinnanchiru Kiliye' for the first time and it was very beautifully and movingly sung. The usual enthusiasm and verve of Sanjay seemed a little reduced that day. But otherwise, still a good concert.
