The concert of Varalakshmi Anandkumar was notable for its sensitivity, and classical values. Her husky voice was in fine trim and fell soothingly on the ears. (Thanks also to the excellent acoustics of the Raga Sudha Hall. You had the feeling that you were listening to serene Chamber Music.)

Her musical lineage , classicism, manodharma and excellent padanthara were evident throughout.

The energy and the intense emotion she infused into the Krithi Visalakshim, Visvesim and her swara singing at the two alternate points Kasivasim and Kapalinim were most enjoyable and bespoke her DKP/DKJ tradition.

She commenced Kambodhi from the Mandara Sthayi and lingered there for a full 3 minutes (absolute bliss) and moved on in stages to the Thara Sthayi, bringing to the fore all the delightful shades and majesty of this heartwarming raga. She followed it up with the demanding creation Koniyaadina to which she did full justice. Nerval was at the evocative line …Ninnu minchina dhaivamu ledhani

Eyebrows were raised when she began Dheena Karunakarane but Ramabadran of SAFE immediately said that D K J used to sing it in his concerts.

She concluded the concert with Manadirkugandhadhu Murugan Roopam of Thanjavur Sankara Iyer.

Any praise to Trivandrum Sampath would be an understatement. Most understanding and sweet.

Thillaisthanam Suri ‘s excellent accompaniment for the Krithis bespoke his concern for the success of the concert.

Is dIna karuNAkaranE an old movie song? I have seen Sri Seshampatti Sivalingam hesitate before he played kARRinilE varum gItam at a concert.

Yes...but it is lovely...just like mA ramaNan, which was first sung by Smt. MSS in a movie, and the lovely cinnanciru kiLiYE....so, I wonder why those eyebrows were raised....
