dear rasikas

Did somebody sing a piece in Devamritha Varshini during the season's katcheri ( seriously?). Is this the reason for " Thane Thandavam" at Chennai???

Btw, a side-bar question. How do you say 'thane'? I have only seen it in print, is it said like the place in Mumbai?

Legend has it that Sri Muthuswami Deekshithar, when travelling to Ettayapuram saw the drought prevailing in the area and sang the krithi "Anandamrithakarshini Amrithavarshini" in the raga Amrithavarshini and when he sang the words "salilam varshaya varshaya varshaya" the heavens opened up and poured down on the parched land.

The raga Devamrithavarshini (aka Nadachinthamani - krithi "Evarani Nirnayinchirira") has nothing to do with rainfall.

It is an entirely different story that every Thomasina, Rickie and Harriet in Chennai (would that be Aishwarya, Arthi and Amritha to choose the most popular names today?), when asked about their most memorable concert experience, invariably say that during their maiden concert in a hot summer month they sang Amrithavarshini raga and it started pouring and they were caught in the downpour without an umbrella as the rains didn't stop even after the end of the concert.

They say this because they don't know the Rest of the Story, as Paul Harvey used to put it.

When Sri Deekshithar saw that the heavy rains were causing flash floods after the parched soil had absorbed as much water as it could, he changed the words and sang "salilam sthambhaya sthambhaya sthambhaya" and the rains stopped. These extraordinary musicians could have done that and walked home without getting their silk sarees wet if only they sang Amrithavarshini again!

About a week ago, "The Hindu" reported that music is being introduced in schools in Chennai. One teacher reportedly said, "It rained after the kids sang Amrithavarshini, though it happens to be the rainy season and that could very well be the reason for the rain."

All I can say is there would be no water shortage in Chennai if every day these magical female musicians sing Amrithavarshini. :P

dear Harimauji

chembai.com internet site ( owned by our man) gives details on how great Chembai brought showers during month of April ( year?) by singing Devamrutha Varshini. I am refering to this incident only. Chembai knew that singing this raga would invite " troubles" for the marraige organisers. Is this a proof to Devamrithavarshini and Varsahm?

Please visit the site!

Ramakrshnanji please enlighten us on this incident!
