NITHYASREE MAHADEVAN AT MUDHRA ON 30/12

Post by CRama »

Nithyasree presented a music concert on 30/12 in the Infosys Hall, Ramakrishna Mission school. She was accompanied by MA Kishnaswami on the violin, Neyveli Skandasubramaniam on the Mridangam and EM Subramaniam on the Ghatam. The list of songs.

Swami naan undan adimai- Natakurinji pada varnam-Papanasam Sivan
Smarane sukhamu- Janaranjini-Adi-Thyagaraja
Anuragamule-Saraswathi-Roopakam-Thyagaraja
Kanchadalayadakshi-Manohari-Adi- 2Kalai- Deekshithar
Vaa Saravanabhavaa-Bilahari-Adi-Koteeswara Iyer
Sankari Sankuru-Adi (Tisra nadai)-Syama Sastri
RTP-Charukesi-Khanda triputa
Pallavi- Pachchaippuyal Mechchakkathu porul
Nee thaane Murugane Guhane
Thani
Naam japan kyon chod diya-Behag
Kasturi thilakam naaraayanam-Karnataka devagandhari

Braving the thane storm which affected the State, there was a sizeable audience for this concert. Nithyasree first expressed her gratitude for the audience. The concert had a bright start with the not so frequently heard varnam of Papanasam Sivan. Second kala swaras were appended for the Janaranjini song. Saraswathi was chosen for the first elaboration. It was a welcome change form the Poorvikalyani which is a common choice. The alapana of Saraswathi is rarely heard in concerts nowadays. She did full justice to the ragam. There was no ambiguity as to the identity right from the word go. The kriti was rendered well and second kala swaras were rendered. Kanchadalyadakshi was rendered in 2 kalai (which is as per DKP school) is in contrast with what you would have heard from MS and others. After the quick filler of Koteeswara Iyer, which was new to me, she took up Saveri as the main piece. This season, Saveri seems to be the choice of many musicians. She did an elaborate alapana for about 10 minutes. The song Sankari sankuru was presented in a neat manner with all the sangathis in tact. Neraval was done elaborately at Syamakrishnasodari and elaborate swaras rendered. This was followed by Thani for 10 minutes.

Charukesi was taken for the RTP. Alapana was rendered in the customary two stages totalling about 15 minutes. The raga alapana was well executed covering three octaves. The pallavi, she announced, was suggested by the Mridangist combining the thane storm and the name of Murugan being a Shashti day. But I was wondering how Pachchaippuyal has got any connection with Murugan. Subsequently Skandasubramaniam explained that this phrase is coming in the Thirupugazh Muththai thiru. Ragamalika swaras were rendered for the pallavi in - Hamsadhwani, Vaasanthi, Anandabhairavi,Ataana, Amritavarshini, Malahari, Nalinakanthi, Abhogi, Begada, Kalyanavasantham, Neelambari, Madhuvanthi, Revathi, Behag, Sindubhairavi, Nata, Gowla, Arabhi, Varali and Sree.

Nithyasree really sang well. But her voice is at times quite shreik - piercing. She should attempt proper modulation- at the higher octaves it is like shouting. Violinist gave the best support. His solo alapanas and returns were very pleasant and appropriate true to his school. His tanam was exceptionally good He received lavish appreciation from the audience. Neyveli also followed quite well with good anticipation and his thani with EM Subramniam was also much enjoyable. There was good team spirit among the artists on the stage which contributed to the success of the concert.

It was a fulfilling concert for me braving Thane.I loved each song.but only hoped she would sing more tukkadas .As usual her RTP is always a pleasure.I love the wya she unleashes various ragas at the audience.I always feel like ,a student sitting in exams which question will come ,in her RTP to see if I can identify the volley of ragas she sings in RTP.It was aesthetic and brainy concert.

@rajeshnat

Arunagirinathar sings of murugan as the one fit to be praised (mechcha thagu porul) by the 'green storm' (Tirumal). Vishnu often described as dark-blue hued is also 'green' sometimes - pachai maa malai pol meni, pachai mal, etc.
