A few days away from Chennai and the season really made me think about this topic in a very positive and serious way. I am listing these 2 points now and will keep on thinking for more like this.
1.To present a entire piece i.e R,Kriti and N in only svarams (notations or notes one may call). This will surely throw more light on the intricacies of the rAgam like what are the notes used and handling of them. For e.g if it is kAmbOji or bEgadA the usage of kAkali nishadham and things like that. This will be useful not only for the discerning rasikAs and connoisseurs of music but supremely beneficial to the students of music. That may be followed by svarams also.
2.To sing charanams of more than one kriti in the same rAgam and tAlam but of different composers or same composer alternately. For e.g singing tulasidalamula and dEva dEva kalayAmi alternating the charanams. Will give a good listening as also the stamp and taste of the different vAggEyakAras.

Doing it for the entire piece may become a bit monotonous... But using swaras during raga alapana selectively could make things more interesting...ganeshkant wrote: 1.To present a entire piece i.e R,Kriti and N in only svarams (notations or notes one may call). This will surely throw more light on the intricacies of the rAgam like what are the notes used and handling of them

Had you been a performing musician, TMK would have had a real tough time in competing with your innovative ideas

Re your first suggestion: isn't this what exactly the instrumentalist is doing?
I do not see any logic behind the second one since lyrics-vise they may not gyve...

Artist should come up with his own way of creative presentation of CM instead rasikas saying what will sound good or what will be attractive to the audience. Supply creates demand and IMHO the rasikas has always accepted the supply if it improves their enjoyment

Re: Innovations in CM - a thought
has modern day ariyakudi's tried singing unknown compositions of T, MD etc, polish them and make them popular? Have they sung not so popular ragas like supradipam, narayani, or not so common mela ragas like paavani? Have they sung all charanams of trinity for those keerthanas only selected charanams are sung?
The issue with too much experimentation with paddathi is that quality of music gets unnoticed in reviews etc. For example, i don't remember reading how the raga alapana was done, what were salient features, how neraval was done, wheather any kannuku was performed, what type of korvai was sung etc.

Yes,but I want the vocalists to do this way so that you get more knowledge as cited in my post.cmlover wrote:Re your first suggestion: isn't this what exactly the instrumentalist is doing?

It is not the lyrics but the approach to the same rAga by means of a composition hence it makes good logic.

Re: Innovations in CM - a thought
If the vocalist is a great artist (example MMI, KVN etc), one can actually hear the swarams/swarasthanam while they do alapana. That's basically the clarity in music. Singing the notes explicitly is not good in concert platform, may best be confined to chamber concerts, lecdem etc.ganeshkant wrote: Yes,but I want the vocalists to do this way so that you get more knowledge as cited in my post.
On similar note, yesterday in Margazhi utsav in Jaya tv, while NSG sang kedaram/kanada keerthana, there was lot of clarity in sangathis!! This is another example. video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEiOtnKR ... re=related
