reviving this thread...

There is a handyman chain called 'Andy on call'.. For fun we refer to it as 'AnDy On cAll'. Then one day we came up with the appropriate CM song for it: 'kUvi azhaiththal kural koduppar kumaran' !

An old joke:

A Malayali singer once rendered Thaaye yasoda thus:

Thaaye yasoda undan NAIR kulatthudittha!

VK, :)

I can offer you this jingle, to be sung by the upcoming Sulamangalam Sisters of your area - hopefully in time for the next big North America Tamil Sangam event:

varuvAnDi SeyvAnDi call-Andy
Andy on Call Andy
Just call Andy
Don't you worry aunty

azhagAga avan Ani aDippAnDi
SuvaTRil aDippAnDi
adhil Angelo painting onnu mATTuvAnDi - Michael
Angelo painting onnu mATTuvAnDi

(Those not familiar with the original tune, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CrSopiZxuQ)

sridhar_rang, :) Funny. Good idea to include the original. There is a drama group here and you have now seeded some material for a skit!! The Sisters' tour is brought to you by 'Andy On Call'!

I have heard this narrated differently. After a musician sang this, a nearby tea shop owner went and thanked him for singing Thaye Yashodha. When the musician asked why, he said "Till today, I had assumed that Krishna belonged to Aayar kulam but after you sang this song, I came to know he is from Nair kulam like me".

Apart from the 'thAyE yasOdaA' joke another one which my father'veeyens' used to tell us is about the song 'rAdE unakku kOpam AgA daDi-rAdE unakku kOpam'.
He used to say "how will rAdai not get angry if she is called 'daDi rAdE' "?

Punarvasu
Nice to see veeyens spirit kept alive!
of course he would follow these with a scintillating anecdote.
Certainly it is unpardonable for the Gopalakrishnan Nair to openly insult the obese RAdha; worth reporting to his mother YaSOdA in a separate episode :D
He even had the audacity to call SatyabAmA a communist when she shut the door wheen he was in an inebriate state while pleading:
Kommy satyabAmA kathavai thiRavAi :D

1940. Ramanuja Iyengar and Chowdiah were chatting after completing a
recital. The conversation turned to what artists could get from their admirers.
The Mysore maestro said: “Usually artists easily get what they want and you are an
expert in getting what you want.”
Ariyakudi replied: “Oh yes. I’ve never had a problem.”
Chowdiah again: “But even an elephant slips and falls sometimes.”
And Iyengar responded: “Failure is not in my dictionary.”
Whereupon Chowdiah challenged Iyengarval to secure, as a gift, a diamond ring
which he had seen on a lady sitting up front in the recital hall. Ariyakudi accepted
the challenge.
Three days later the artists met again. As the recital began, Iyengar started
to keep time with his right hand and called out: “Chowdiah!” The violinist quickly
saw that Iyengar was wearing the ring. When he later inquired how he had
managed to acquire it, Ariyakudi replied that it was a secret. “The secret,” he
explained upon being pressed to reveal it, “is I found out that the lady is a
musician. After the last recital, she asked me to teach her the padam I had sung. I
asked for the ring as guru dakshina...and got it!”
(from Shruti Ariyakkudi issue 42)

A man approached Vedharanyam Krishnamurthy Bagavathar to learn violin. He said he had learnt something already from two people and elaborated, 'I went to ................... vidhvAn. He passed away. The I went to ........................ Bagavathar. He died. So I have come to you. Shall I play something for you to evaluate and decide about the level?'

Overheard at the Narada Gana Sabha canteen:
Mama: Did you hear the waiter sing Swami Haridasgiri's bhajanai along with the tape as he served us keerai vadai? The waiter at the next table was humming a good Kalyani.
Mami: (sniffing) So, now you want me to sing in the kitchen?
Mama: Ennamma, you have been doing it every morning for thirty years now! Namavali for the milkman, alapanai for the maid, tanam for daughters-in-law, swaraprastara for sons, tukkadas for grandchildren... I get the best, tani avartanam crackling into Tadhinginatom! When Shri Maharajapuram Viswaantha Iyer was residing at Nungambakkam and Mahaperiyaval was camping at a place adjacent to his house and was on mounavratha. One evening when Shri MVIyer was singing at his house "vinayakuni" and singing neraval at "anadharakshaki sri kamakshi". Suddenly Mahaperiyaval got up from his seat walked and reached shri mviyer's house and entered. An agitated Sri MViyer then performed namaskaram and periyaval said "your singing made me come out of the house" - of course out of the mounavratha also. That time Sri mviyer had a desire in his mind. He wanted mahaperiyaval to gift the rudraksha combined spatika mala that periyaval used to wear. But he did not get this in his life time.

Shri santhanam visited Sri periyaval at Satara one evening, periyaval asked him to sing Mohanam in detail. After this, Shrri Santhanam asked if he could leave, the saint asked him to stay that night. Early in the morning when Santhanam heard some sound in the adjacent room. when he opened the window, he was surprised to see periyaval cleaning his staying place on his own. periyaval on seeing him thro’ the window asked him to come and sing mohanam ragam "evaruru ninuvina" again which he did. Periyava gave prasadam and permitted him to leave. Santhanam left with heavy heart as he was expecting that gift that his father wanted to receive.
He would have waked some 100 feet.
Suddenly the mutt staff told him periyaval wanted him back…Santhanam rushed back to the saint.
A smiling saint removed the rudraksha cum spatika mala and presented it to Santhanam
Shri Santhanam was in tears. May be this was the beginning of the honours that he received which even his father did not.

(As told by Dr Ganesh Radhakrishnan some time back to Shri. Panchanathan Suresh..)
