After reading a review by CRama on his recent KGS concert I looked forward towards a chance.
nAdaswaram is not an easy instrument to play as you all know since it requires a lot of stamina and breath control.
When he played the initial 2 phrases sans R I thought probably he may play a varnam in Amruthavarshini but he went on to play mandhAri for about 3 mins.with the phrases following one after other in an easy flow followed by the kriti in a super fast speed and here the tavil artists kept pace beautifully and set the mood.
The next piece in janaranjani was played in a slower speed that evoked the bhAvam of this kriti beautifully which was in full contrast to the first one and immensely reminded us of the late KVN.
Then came tOdi and here he played brigAs in typical TNR style. While I thought that may be the main for that evening he finished the rAgam in about 7 mins.and played the not so often heard ktiti in concert platforms in a 2 kaLai rUpakam. It was good.
The main for the evening SankarAbharanam was dealt with a lot of detail and all the 3 sthAyis special mention must be made for the prayogams in mandhrasthAyi.The kriti was a tamizh kriti which he even sang the pallavi off stage when I spoke with him briefly along with Sri.nAgeswaran.It was in misra-chApu.It was a composition of I think vaLLalAr.The total exercise was good with a lively tani by the duo.
Then came the piece de resistance of the evening in durgA.It was again dealt with lot of detail in typical hindustAni style. It lingered long in my mind while I reached home.made my supper and watched “hitch”(a nice movie sans gore and action that will put a constant smile on your lips. Will smith is a high caliber artist just like our InjikkuDi).
I don’t remember after how many long years I attended a sabha concert of nAdhaswaram. It gave good vibes and the rasika in me was at peace apart from being happy.

Ganeshkant, I have often wondered whether a Shehnai (hindustani counterpart of nagaswara) could attempt a single carnatic phrase! Great is the scope of our music system!

Once TNR met BismillAh Khan;TNR played our hindOlam in his shehenAi whereas Bismillah Khan tried that in nAdhaswaram but couldn't.I don't know whether our instrument is great or our musicians are !Sivaramakrishnan wrote:Ganeshkant, I have often wondered whether a Shehnai (hindustani counterpart of nagaswara) could attempt a single carnatic phrase!

Funny . For all I know Injukkudi may have listened to a lot of Bismillah . No point in chest beating - tarzan style - with our music - their music stuff .

As a matter of Record , TNR did play Malkauns , once . Which looks like a tribute to Bismillahs great 3 minute LP . if we hear both the compositions .

Neither.I don't know whether our instrument is great or our musicians are !
instruments are different. That is all we can conclude from that anecdote. If we want to go one step further, we can say 'For someone new to an instrument, shehenAi seems to be easier to play than Nadaswaram'.
