My only wish is they use some other name for the program and the title/award, but I do not see that happening.

What will be a better name that is neither complex sanskrit word nor western based but still simple and rolls off the tongue. And conveying the fact the winner is at the top among the upcoming youth contenders. I can not think of anything yet. I do not like the names like 'super singer' etc. either. I thought 'Hariyudan nAn' was a good choice of name for that show instead of something like Tamil Film Song Idol, but it does not translate to a title ( 'He/She is a hariydan nAn' does not make sense) but that is a minor thing that can be sacrificed.

That title is tamil. A sanskrit title would be better than a tamil, kannada, telugu etc kind of name.

Young Star of Carnatic Music?

There is so much of tanglish and modified English in catchy TV land titles--and that's how it came about, perhaps. However, it's better if CM programs have an apt title and not something which sounds as if it's a pop show.

Arasi, thanks. You have put in words what was troubling me about the Idol thing in the carnatic context. This idol business originated with the popularity of American Idol, which was preceded by the British show 'Pop Idol'. Actually, the full title of the first episode of American Idol was "American Idol: The Search for a Superstar". They were honest about it, the show is just the first part, they wanted to find the next one who can sell millions of records. The superstar part is yet to be realized for the most part but the show itself is a monumental hit.

Dragging all that in the pop context works, but not so much for classical.

I agree the title has to be catchy, easily rolls off the tongue and not some complicated Sanskrit title. It is a tamil channel, so tamil is fine, or tanglish works as long as it is tasteful.

Having nit-picked this title thing to death, ;) to be fair, I have to state that shows like this are very good for carnatic music.

Maravar or Carnatic Maravan may be appropriate instead of Carnatic Idol

I read that as "maven" --- and thus learnt what maven means from google.

A maven (also mavin) is a trusted expert in a particular field, who seeks to pass knowledge on to others. The word maven comes from Hebrew...

I always thought it was derogatory. Been getting it wrong all these years. Amazing what one learns through rasikas.org
it's better if CM programs have an apt title and not something which sounds as if it's a pop show.
Yes, I would have thought so too, but isn't it a double-edged thing, trying to make carnatic more acceptable and popular to the young?

The Thamizh title "ISAI MANI" (~ = music gem) for Carnatic Music Idol and ILAM ISAI MANI for Jr. Carnatic Music Idol may be other options since it is a Thamizh channel that is conducting the program and 'mani' allows it to be gender neutral.
