The annual 2012 mahasivArathi season began with vijaysiva's concert in besantnagar rathnagireeshwarar temple which is of late becoming a favourite venue for my concert hopping. There is a lovely ambience in that temple. Vijay started with inta calamu in BeGaDa , his voice really zoning to an intense classicism that lasted for the next 2 hours and 15 mins. samaja varadA , a rare poochi krithi was sung very well with a nice dose of well trimmed but still wonderful neraval.Swaras were apt and went well with the neraval

The harikAmbOdhi was enjoyable for its alApana , liked his full throated singing not a wink I got confused that it was kamAs or a kAmbOdhi, dinamani vamsa was not full aggression like a ssi , but certainly a nice rendition with another brief neraval that hit the right spots with embar kannan riding well the unusual unhurried hurry calmBodhi.

The days best was indeed his submain mukhAri, in the just concluded season I heard the same pahimAm ratnachala, vijay is brilliant in showing restraint with controlled aggression and mukhari suits him a lot , the rendition of krithi was a testimony to his illustrious paddantharam suddham and swaras were well done , certainly the swaras was not that great as his IFA few months back but definitely very well sung.

Two fillers ,the slow neelAmbari was something to rave about for a lovely shyama sastri krithi in neelAmbari that too with a brief slokham opener .The fast in kaikadasi was just ok, could have been better if manoj supported with more roll.

7A. kailAsapathE mAmPAhi(R N S T) - kalyAni - Mysore VasudevAcharyA
12 mins alApana 8 mins violin return
5 mins neraval in "hari ranga kshetra gangAdhara????"
5 mins swaras
7B. tani for 11 mins

8A. pAl ninaindooTTum tAyinum - nalinakanthi +
Ananda mayA - sahanA +
yAn unai thOdarNdu chikkena piDithEN - behAg - manickavAsagar
8B. Aadum chidambaramO - behAg - GKB
9. kandar alankAram or anubhoothi ??? - rAgamAliga ending with mangalam

Mukhari as a submain with kalyAni as a main was the combination that Vijay Choosed .The melakartha #65 was very good more before the neraval and swaras. The alApana was well done with a well tailored proportion and there was intenseness in alApana rendition which I liked .The krithi a rare krithi of MV was nice , but in neraval and swaras it did not give me that oomph effect , they were bit too short . At times proportion of vijay siva is a double edged sword, at times I feel it is just rightly done without overdoing , but few times in my ears I felt it as little excessive ration.

IN tukkadas the manickavasagar's pAl ninaindu was lovely and really extraordinary.Every rAga had brimmed with intense classicism , nalinAkanthi start was just too good, sahAnA always shines in viruththam and ending with Aadum chidambaramO in behAg was really beautiful.

In the last number (assuming it is kandar anubhoothi was so dense in words , could not catch excepting one or two phrases). This no he took his cymbals , I am not a big fan of cymbals and jAlrAs in carnatic concert.

The violinist embarkannan is a joyful player, his play has azhuttam and I liked his play a lot .I have not heard much of embAr kannan he is personally a rare violin vidwan to me , considering that most of his accompaniments are with few artists who I get to hear very less.embAr kannan pepped the concert and I dont think I have seen vijaysiva-embarkannan in a concert advertisement in the last few years so it is indeed a rare combo.

Manoj Shiva was going very well with his brother, the support was very good , tani was just plain nevertheless he gave able support.

VijaySiva has his style of focussing more with pAddanthara suddham , there was not much to spot an out of the world inspiring sangathi , but his renditions always has more pristineness, especially felt in the manickavAsagar viruththam where there was a touch of intense peace .Personally in the last 7 years + , he is always an artist in my top brackets. I would have preferred little more kalyAni neraval and swaras(For me , kalyAni tastes better in neraval and swaras than alApanA) and also the drop of chingu chakku cymbals in the last number.

Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours and 15 mins.

Must be kandar anubhuthi starting with 'nenjakanakallum nehizhdhuruha'..VS always sings that in rAgamAlikai. We in our family used to sing all the adis in simple 'hamsadhwani' during shashti poojai.

Rajesh, I love Sri Vijay Siva's selections - done very well to suit to the purpose.

I think the nereval for sAmaja varada would have been at 'kAma janaka...'

Thank you for your cheerful review, Rajesh.. Great singer, lovely, quiet location (as I remember it), nice kritis, wish I'd been there. Look forward to hearing more about these evenings.
