What an amazing line up of a few hundred artists. Must be a great effort. Congratulations and best wishes to the organisers and artists.

A MMI centenary festival without the torch bearer of the baani, Sri.TVS seems a bit strange. May be he is busy elsewhere. Whatever be the reason I am sure Cleveland will miss him dearly.

What a mega-event this has become. From a fairly small festival that used to run over the Easter weekend it is now huge. Dance seems to have become a major part of it, especially the evening slots.

Dear kssr, YOUR observations about the absence of TVS is DEAD ON to say it in American linguo. ESP. so because I was the first person in N.A. to promote him by arranging a concert tour with MC & TKM IN 1975 when had very few concerts; 25 of the arranged concerts in N.A. were cancelled bec. Trichy Sankaran had arranged MSG at same TIME! & all the organisers correctly said they had not heard of TVS. To his credit he made his career in that tour. Actually the whole TVS group were forced to spend a month in my house in N.Y. & another at VV'S house in Cleveland while we could re-arrangethe concerts.. Why then has this happened? I cannot give the details here. DO NOT BELIEVE IN AIRING "DIRTY LAUNDARY" in public! If you are particular in knowing why I will be happy to give you the details to you in person. In the meanwhile let me thank you for recognising the hard work of the Cleveland Aradhana Committee. VKV

Sri. VKV ,
From your various posts on this forum, I understand your enormous contribution to carnatic music, both thro Cleveland and other places. My respects.
Answering your question, I have no keen interest in knowing the reasons behind some bitterness that seems to have crept in unfortunately between a great organisation and a great artist.

May I in all humility suggest that you let bygones be bygones and once again reactiviate the great friendship that goes back to 37 years. The spirit of reconciliation is what our saint composers have taught us repeatedly. The spirit of our music system keeps telling us to put away our ego for the sake of sangeetham and Ramabhakthi. Such reconciliation will be a special tribute to the memory of Sri.MMI, in this centenary year. I have had the opportunity to have the acquaintance of Sri.TVS and my feeling was that he is one who would "not hurt a fly", as the saying goes. If you feel that these words of an ordinary rasika like me, much junior to you in all respects, to be presumptuous, I sincerely apologise. I do not think that Sri.TVS does visit these columns; but if he does, I am sure that he would not hesitate in initiating a dialogue with you. At the end of the day, the biggest beneficiary will be CM itself.

I wish you Sir and your marvellous team many many more years of service to the cause of CM.

Dear kssr,
There is no bitterness in either my part or the aradhana part. I am sure TVS has his reasons for choosing not to participate bec. he was invited & discussions took place also...I think we are better off puttung this particular discussion to rest. VKV

Madurai Mani Iyer is sort of a Nadayogi and TVS has a more vibrant style. I can understand that he wanted to establish his own style.

One thing I have observed is: when Trichur Ramachandran talks about GNB, his eyes light up and the way he talks - "Enga Vadhayar, ... " you can easily infer Trichur's respect for GNB. Many other examples - KVN for Ariyakudi, TK Govinda Rao for Musiri, ... perhaps due to their Guru / Sishya relationship. I would love to listen to TVS talk about MMI.

Here's a short documentary about MMI with comments from Sri LGJ, TNK, Vellore Ramabhadran and UKS. (No TVS, though). I think I've seen something by TVS on MMI on youtube, so I will look for that and post it when I find it.

TVS sang about his Guru at the Madurai Mani Iyer Centenary/Narada Gana Sabha Anniversary concert! Read the review!

On a couple of TV interviews when asked "What is the most important thing that you have learnt from your uncle/guru", I have heard him say that it is "humility" and his devotion to the great artist as he says that is unmistakable. I recently heard his concert at the Indiranagar sabha which was a 100% MMI package. (There is a review of the concert on these columns) There was also a separate function towards the centenary where Sri. RK Srikantan and Sri.TVS had spoken. I did not attend the function, though.
