Kolahalam

Post by satyabalu »

"raga Kolahalam was rendered which I am hearing for the first time. It is a janya of Sankarabharanam" pasted from CRama's fine review of Dr. Patula Rama concert. What this raga is all about please?

This question has been out there for a while.. I haven't seen this review.. but a song I remember is Madilona Yochana by Sri Tyagaraja.

To me it is a lively ragam as its name suggests, and this song uses in its first syllables the vakra swaras that make the raga different from Shankarabharanam: The arohanam begins with s p m g.

Arohanam: S P M G M P D N S
Avarohanam: SNDPMGRS.

My feeling is that the kolahalam (lively) aspect of the raga comes from the SPM, which takes away the weight of Shankarabharanam.
