Jagan,
Good to hear about this event, the release of Tanjavur Sankara Iyer's compositions.
Rama nAmamE tudi manamE, kshEmamuRavE dinamE was the first song I knew of his. Every time somone starts a concert with mAl marugan, I cannot get it out of my head for days.
Ganeshkant,
Is he living in that part of the world we both come from? I was born there, though the village of both my grandfathers is a little way away.
Heard him in concert several years ago in Chennai. Hope his health is okay.

Re: Release of a C D of Thanjavur Sankara Iyer at Tirunelvel
Folks: I admit having known Tanjore Sankara Iyer for over 60 years,I would have least expected the festivities in Tirunelveli District(of which I am a proud descendant)==I have always smarted under the fact that Tanjoreans thought less of Tirunelveliyans when it came to Musical tastes--may be it is my inferiority complex.Nice to know that the Nellaiyans(I am sure Arasi would second me on this!) are honoring Tanjavur Sankara Iyer. Now for an anecdote--Old readers of Ananda Vikatan may remember Devan's character Mallari Rao--famous for his unsolicited "memory-lane-narrations"--the giveaway to the fictitious visitor to the fictitious Mallari Rao was if the left thumb of Mallari Rao starts to wag then be forewarned an anecdote is not far behind!! These days I am feeling like Mallari Rao and I am wondering if the forumites have got tired of these nostalgic trivia!! But not to be deterred by any such protestations I continue to press on----- to quote Shakespeare--"All these insults I bore with a patient shrug because sufferance is the badge of our tribe"--in this case the chronicler's tribe!!
The story dates back to more than 60 years-the place Bombay. The late Mr. Sethuraman(father of Aruna Sairam)--a quintessential discerning music lover that I always admire asked my father to come over to his house to meet a young man. This young man was very reserved, did not have much of a voice to begin with and had come to Bombay from the South hoping to pursue his musical career either in teaching or performing--Sethuraman and his wife--a wonderful hostess whose quiet hospitality was unmatched ---saw great potential in this man and wanted my father to join him in getting tuition and a few chamber concerts for the young man(Shanmukhananda Sabha was not big enough in those days to open a School). The efforts had some lukewarm success but the young man got some recognition for his Vidwath but even after his return to Chennai he did not get much traction--but amongst his peers like TMT,
Ramnad Krishnan,MLV(who helped popularise his songs) he commanded great respect. Slowly his compositions got accepted and DKJ did his bit to popularise songs like Mahadeva Shiva Shambo,(Revathi)Gangadeeswaram(Sindhubhairavi).Today he is very wellknown as a composer/tuner.
The young man now in his Mid-eighties is none other than Tanjavur Sankara Iyer.
To this day I believe that had Mr.Sethuraman not intervened in time to resurrect a deserving musical talent(TSI was very depressed at that time not being able to "market" himself in the tough environment) TSI would have gone into oblivion , It is but fitting that for the last 20 years or so he has received several accolades and I for one am happy that he has gotten the recognition he richly deserved. If Mr.Sethuraman were alive today he would have been the happiest man to savor TSI's success.
No matter how talented you may be you will still need a lucky break or two--today's environment is much more conducive to spotting/encouraging talent so that one may not be dependent on a patron or luck to further one's career as was the case 50 years ago.

MKR,
Like Mulliner, Mallari Rao is treasured as a teller of tales (so are you!). What if the authors didn't hail from our part of TN!
Fortune did not smile upon him, but TS has contributed enough to CM to be remembered by rasikAs and musicians who are familiar with his music.

Sri Sankara Iyer is staying with his brother's son at Sankarnagar for the past 3 years. This function is being arranged at Tirunelveli because he is not in a position to travel to Chennai and it was felt that he should be present at the release function Sri V V Sundaram who has kindly agreed to preside over the function also hails from Tirunelveli.

Re: Release of a C D of Thanjavur Sankara Iyer at Tirunelvel
Years ago, in 1999 Sankara Iyer had come to T. Viswa's concert at Gowri Ramnarayan's house. He asked me whether he knew any place where he could stay till 'the end' with dignity. It was then that I came to know that Sankara Iyer was staying in an old age home in Tiruvanmiyur. My heart broke as I contemplated upon the vagaries of cruel life on this earth. That an accomplished musician cannot live in this world with some dignity came as a great shock. Till a few years back very few people cared for him. Even when magazines went to interview him he was living in that old age home. I think he shared a room with another person.
Relieved to know that his brother's son has brought Sankara Iyer to Tirunelveli and made him stay with him. The veteran can now live the evening of his life in dignity. But Sankara Iyer's plight for a few years (for more than a decade) of having to live in an old age home must make us all contemplate seriously on the cruelty that many artists have to face in their lives.

Re: Release of a C D of Thanjavur Sankara Iyer at Tirunelvel
A couple of quick points .
I was part of a household in the 80s , where TSI lived and taught .In KK Nagar. The daughter of my land Lady was a senior disciple . I used to have a close relationship with him and can write in great detail on those days . He was a great admirer of Ustad Amir Khan , with whom he had a nice relationship in his Mumbai Days .
NSG ( Vidyarthi ) was part of that scene too .
Much of what we now see as a problem-in old age -was due to his lack of business instincts . It is a problem that oppresses most of us , who wish to get the most of life through what we love . The reality that we are destined to live longer , and that it gets more expensive as every day passes . And that we need to feed ourselves .
Those wonderful days , he gave me an impression that he did not care much for the future .
The musical world took a lot of time to make amends and I distinctly remember that it was the efforts of N Ravikiran -NSG - and others which brought some stability - With a purse here and and an award there .
As far as old age homes are concerned - Whether that is an un-dignified life is debatable . I have two cousins in Bangalore who have their fit-as-a-fiddle - parents in old age homes in the same city . The way all of them describe it to me , they give me a complex that I am missing something in life
On a serious note I must admit that it is a very personal issue . We will never know the pain involved as outsiders , even for the children .
I pen these words only to correct an impression that may have been created - that he was abandoned in old age .
No . He is a bachelor . Has lived his life like a Saint . Has been more disturbed with dilution in musical standards than anything else in the world . Has always had an acerbic tongue that spared no one .
My My !! He was such a purist that he would rant about CM being only for the Cognoscenti and Chamber Music . Not for Rikshaw wallahs or Goshtis
As my Dad uttered his dying words to me - Take care of your mother dear , Old age requires very little . But it needs that little very badly
This is something that is going to trouble most of us in future . Loneliness . That was probably what he suffered at the old age home . And probably that is what stands corrected today .
The world that he loved and admired was vanishing rapidly in front of his eyes . And that is something true for all of us , too .

I have known Sri Sankara Iyer, for nearly forty years, right from the time he came back from Bombay.
I am intrigued by the words "with dignity" attributed to him. Wherever he stayed he was treated with the greatest regard and respect. Even in the Old Age Home.

ALL TIRUNELVELIANS COLLAR UP.
The function to release the C D "Sankarakritam" at Tirunelveli was a great success thanks mainly to the active interest, great support and generous hospitality extended by Smt Usha Raman, Principal of the Jayendra Saraswathi Golden Jubilee Matriculation Higher Secondary School Sankarnagar. and her devoted staff. All of us from Chennai were completely bowled over by the magnificienct gesture of the Hosts in providing an excellent lunch and dinner. All the Speakers on the Dais were also honoured by presenting them with Shawls on behalf of the School ! Overwhelmimg.. If this kind of support is available, such functions are better held at stations where the artistes reside.
Sri Ramnarayanan of Sruti and Sri Nirmal Ramachandran, Correspondent of the School could not attend,-- the former due to an attack of Viral Fever. However, Sri. R . Rajagopal , Secretary, Sri Dikshitar Memorial Committee Ettayapuram , Mr. William Winfield a sponsor of many activities of the School and Sri M.Radhakrishnan , Asst Secretary Hamsadhwani participated in the function.
The gathering , besides the general public consisted of many senior students of the School.
Sri V V Sundaram deftly used the occasion to exhort the studenta to emulate, the uncompromising adherence to tradition and unflinching efforts of Sankara Iyer.
An Atmartha function befitting the sublime music of Sankara Iyer'.
