V.SHANKARANARAYANAN - 26/2-MUMBAI -MULUND FAS

Post by priyashekar »

V.ShankarNaryanan - Vocal
Mangala Vaidyanathan - Violin
Bombay Shankarnarayanan - Mridhangam

Chalamu seyya – Valaji – ?
Ganamurthe – Ganamurthe – Thayagaraja - S
Evarikai – Devamanohari-
VaA muruga – Begada -? – A,S at VaA Muruga.
Varuvaro Varam Tharuvaaro – Syama -?
Pankaja Lochana – Kalyani – A,N,S at brindavanantha
RTP – Dwi raga Pallavi – Vasanta & Bhairavi –
Shruti laya bhava sangeetham en Vasantha
Bhairavi ennai aadari – R,T , in Vasanta ,bhairavi S at Vasanta ,Bharavi & Vasanta bhairavi
Thunbam nergayil – Desh -Bharati dasan
Muruga Muruga muruga – Bharatiyar – Ragamalika in Nattai kuringji, sahana, bageshri, hamir kalyani, desh ,surutii.
Pavamana – Saurashtram.

A brilliant concert which would have reached greater heights if the pakka vadhhyam was pakka.
Like Dhoni saving India in one dayers Shankar narayanan single handedly won the match – concert.

A brilliant Ganamurte,Evarikai ,crisp Vamuruga in begada were wonderfully rendered. The syama was sedate

He then sarted the masterful kalyani alaap and pankaja lochana .What an alaap and neraval and swaram! Simply spell bound by the array of neravals and swarams he unleashed.Amazing.

RTP was just out of the world .Alternating between Vasanta and bhairavi in R and Tanam he was in full command. When he came to swaras he showed his class by bringing in Vasanta bhairavi and did a marvelous finish.outstanding RTP .

He followed with Thunbam nergayil and muruga in ragamalika.
He showed his class in fast swaras and quick change of ragam with out confusing the audience.

The violinist was clearly struggling to cope up with his energy and dynamism ,while mridangam was a bit better .
There was distinct TNS stamp in his rendition of swaras and crisp alaaps and neravals and not to mention trying new pidis.

A singer to watch indeed .It was announced that he is Vice President in Citibank Singapore and keeps flying to India for concerts.Kudos to him for working and singing so wonderfully.
A wonderful concert worth attending only for Shankarnarayanan’s energetic singing .

I heard him in a jugal bandhi here in Chennai a couple of m months before. He has good potential and the influence of TNS is apparent. If only he can improve his modulation a bit he will sound better.

Tx for the review Priyashekhar. Keep them coming. This pallavi that he sang is popularized by TNS.

S he had lot of TNS influence say two years ago.,as Sri.TNS is his manasega guru.
But now a days he has come on his own,TNS influence has minimised a lot,
Better we should comment on his singing .,citibank things are not relevant in this forum.

Priya Shekar,

Thank you very much for the coverage. It appears , Mulund Fine Arts are in revival mode now. Its a good thing to happen for Central suburbs. Even Thane is coming up well now with Kala Mandal doing their best.

Shayamkalyan74,

I will definitely consider the citibank ( Banker ) aspect as someone working for a MNC Bank at a senior level ( with hectic targets, timelines and challenges ) and also able to dedicate time for classical music is really praiseworthy !

Priya and Balaji,
No harm in providing the information.
If u see all reviews about Sri.V.Shankarnarayanan in rasikas this "citi bank" pops up.(may be as citi never sleeps, this citi bank issue also never goes)
So i feel it is over shadowing his concert performance.
Even sri.shankarnarayanan would love to see reviews about his performance in that particular day .

Priya,
If i remember correctly last year also u provided the same information while reviewing his concert in "Fine arts chembur"

Shamsir. My god !I dint imagine old posts will be re visited. Now I do remember. It was only out of awe (jealousy?) I reported this.As I discontinued learning music once when Ijoined eng and now that I will be completing my graduation this year I am inspired by such artists to carry on singing.Sorry if I am on tangent.

PriyaShekar, thanks for your review. I can only agree with some fellow members that Shankar Narayanan has evolved into a fine musician in the past few years. Best wishes for his continued success.
As far as I know he is working in India from last year.
I will definitely consider the citibank ( Banker ) aspect as someone working for a MNC Bank at a senior level ( with hectic targets, timelines and challenges ) and also able to dedicate time for classical music is really praiseworthy !
