Thank you VK Raman, that was an educative find - the same source has several other interesting videos as well covering a wide range of lesser known dance and music from the Indian subcontinent, including the making of a saraswati veena, also from jackwood and the making of the northern sarangi.

There's a short video on the Kanjira - with women players - and just learned that the frame drum kanjira ring is made of jackwood with stretched lizard skin for playing!

It has been illegal to kill the lizard for some years. Whilst no tourist will be able to buy a traditional kanjira in an open shop, the makers continue to supply the artists as ever.

Sadly, nobody has been able to match the skin qualities with a synthetic alternative, although several attempts have been made, and, indeed, are commercially available.
