WORKSHOP BY VIDHUSHI SUGUNAPURUSHOTHAMAN'S COMPOSITIONS

Post by S.NAGESWARAN »

Dear Rasikas,

The workshop conducted by Vidushi Sugunapurothaman at Arkay convention centre on 03.03.2012 was a low-key affair. The students of the madam were taught the compositions composed by the madam.

This training by the madam is a precursor to the 70th birthday celebrations of the madam on 24.03.2012 at the Bharathya Vidhya Bhavan Auditorium and the students will be singing the compositions of Vidhushi Sugunapurushothaman.

In the first day workshop, the following krithis composed by the madam were taught.

1.A Ragamalika in the Priya ragas Karaharapriya, Kokilapriya, Ramapriya, Shanmukapriya, Pasupathipriya, Rishabapriya, Gayakpriya and Rasikapriya.
2.A Krithi in Yadukulakambhoji [GanapathiyeCharanam in Adi Thalam].
3.A Krithi “ Hemavathi Padmavathi “in Hemavathi ragam in Misra Chapu Thalam.
4.A KRITHI “ Krupa Juda Samayamamma “ in the new ragam Hamsalatha [ Hamsadwani swaras and in the Arohanam and Lathangi in the Avarohanam].
5.The Krithi “Punniam Saida Thai “in the Ragamalika with Sindubairavi, Yamuna Kalyani, Malayamarutham , Kalyanavasantham and Neelambari.

Xerox copies of the krithis with notation were circulated to all the disciples as well as the Raikas who attended the workshop.

A Total no of 23 disciples and 17 Rasikas attended the first day workshop on 03.03.2012 from 10.30 to 13.00 hrs.

Vidhushi madam should have spent a lot of time in composing the Priya Ragam RMK.

Ragam Hamsalatha and composition was melodic.

All the ragams selected for the last composion were very melodious and you will be enchanted when you listen to her singing the ragams Yamuna kalyani and Mayayamarutham with melodious sancharams.

Madam gave me the permission to upload the songs.

I will be uploading the songs in due course.

The workshop will continue tomorrow also from 10.30 to 13.00hrs [04.03.2012.

Thank you for letting me know about this event, which I was not able to attend. I had two engagements on Sunday, including Sumithra V's concert. I've put the 24th event in the diary, and look forward to seeing you there.

Smt Suguna i think i also into the initiative of translating the Telegu padams and javalis into tamil without changing the tune or tala of the original composition. One example i know of is Vaani pondu chaalu vardane being sung as Venu ganam thenaai inikkidu... This is a very welcome initiative as Smt Suguna writes the song bearing in mind the mood, lyrics, melody, movement and most importantly the meaning of the original version.
Hope she would do the same for all padams and javalis so that we tamil speakers can also benefit from understanding their beauty,

Dear Rasikas,

The download link of the first krithi Ragamalika of the priya ragams composed by Vidhushi Sugunapurushothaman and taught to the disciples of the madam on the first day of the workshop [03.03.2012] is given below.

http://www.mediafire.com/?63ytjjxi1uz3nuw

[01 Priya RAGAMS RMK.mp3 - 30 MB]

You can listen to her melodic voice and the details about the ragams explained by her to the disciples.

In my first report about the workshop, for want of suitable words, I have mentioned that “The workshop conducted by Vidushi Sugunapurothaman at Arkay convention centre on 03.03.2012 was a low-key affair. The students of the madam were taught the compositions composed by the madam.“

I feel that it would be appropriate to read the sentence as follows.

“The workshop conducted by Vidushi Sugunapurothaman at Arkay convention centre on 03.03.2012 commenced with teaching her disciples many of the compositions composed by her over the years.
