Hello Folks!
I know there are quite a few online stores that sell carnatic music cds and cassettes (khazana.com, charsur.com, etc).
But is there any website that offers online carnatic music downloads (mp3? aac? wma?) instead of cd/cassette mail order?

If not, is it not high time to set up an online carnatic music download enterprise? Guess this would be quite a good thing for various carnatic music performing musicians in that even new/upcoming artists can peddle their wares online and find their niche.

I for one would like to get legal paid for downloads. Apple charges US$ 0.99 for a song! For that cost approximately we can get atleast 1 hour of whatever music we fancy today in Indian market in the form of a cassette. If I can pay the equivalent price, guess that would offer quite a nice distribution channel for carnatic music.

My 2 cents worth!

Sankar... one such website is http://tamil-songs.co.in

It's promoted by www.chennaionline.com, and has individual paid-for song downloads

Thanks SRK for that pointer. Have not visited chennaionline.com for quite sometime and so missed this development.

The sites seems to have varying price for each song. Any idea on how they price individual songs? Duration? Popularity?

Also, they seem to charge almost twice for dollar purchases even for downloads..Hmmm. ( may be they will spin it as a discounted price for rupee purchases ;) ).

I dont think they'll use popularity since they cant fix prices subjectively. Either the price is based on length or a proportion of the price of the entire album, or both.

You can buy most of the Charsur albums in www.real.com. There are some from AVM Audios and few other companies. I think its about 99 cents a song. I saw Sanjay, TMKrishna and Aruna Sairam's albums from Charsur in that site. There are some CDs of BMK and MSG too. Its easier to search with the Artist names than going by classifications given in the site. Some artists are classified under Reggae !!!
