With her mellifluous voice, Smt. VS casted an exclusive musical spell today on Thyagaraja Krithis at Rama Bhaktha Jana Sabha ( RA Puram; near Sringeri Mutt). Brilliantly supported by, Shri. MA Krishnaswami on violin, Shri. KMS Mani on mridangam and Shri Chandrasekara Sharma on Ghatam, Smt. VS commenced the concert with a delightful meluko (bowli) and built an instant emotional connect with rasikas. Filled with smoothly gliding silky voice, she then transported into Bhoopali based Rama Ninnu and represented the essential characteristics of raga through all her creative sargam passages.
Mukhari based Enta Ninne was the third presentation and had her typical ingenious signatures through delightful streams of alaap, sargams and bol-baants. Through a range of emotions during alaaps, Smt. VS then reconnoitered a rare raga Nagandhini (Sattaleni Dinamu) with a scintillating performance. She also ensured to manifest raga framework through an array of sargam movements.
Eti Janmamidi - Varali followed next and had its phenomenal share of detailed bol-banav, bol-baants, behlawas, bol- gamaks and sargams. Eti Yochanalu (kiranavali) came in next with rich expressive content and quixotic entreaty. Without disturbing the pensive vein of rasikas, Smt. VS enabled superb flow of ornamented sargams as part of her manodharma statements.
With increased impetus, Smt. VS revered the rasikas with the main presentation of the evening based on shankarabaranam (Eduthanilichi). Highlighting the roots of raga-lakshana, Smt. VS detailed the elaboration with slow pace and gradually built the momentum to ornament all other flowery variations. She was able to enrich almost all forms of alankaars mandated to represent creative-side of raga presentations and sophisticated the performance with spiritual heights.
Pahi rama rama in Karaharapriya was then presented by Smt VS with an added charm to the rendition. Her vocal techniques exuberated interesting zeal all through the song. She then concluded in style with Pathiki Haarathi in Surati , commencing the song with the anupallavi line of the bandish. It was yet another hallmark concert of this dedicated musician.
PS: Not sure if organizers did not inform the concert timing to all rasikas as the auditorium started filling heavily after 15 minutes of concert commencement. Known for her timely humor, Smt. VS quipped a witty remark after her first song that “ Pathu per kai thattradhu, nooru per kai thattraa maadhri irukku”.

* You are in for a disappointment !
If you think* a senior artist of her calibre would not accept for a delicate timing @ 4.30 PM on a sunday (MA &Chamber concert may be exemptions) .granting the fact that Organisers had a regular discourse session to follow soon thereafter.or
* If a serious & long time listener thinks she can not bring out (Pracharathill illada) a rare kriti every occasion -Allow me to digress -We mostly listen rare ones during Akandams "Sattileni dinamu " ...could not find in SKA T.S. Parthasarathy's Book.-remember TSK rendering it long back.
--- Pahi pahi Rama enthu ( Divyanama Keerthana in whichThiagaraja lines up Sita, all the brothers &Anjaneya) raising the bar on her own rich repertoire or
* Her rasikas will miss the concerts if the prog schedules are not hosted well in advance in media &Rasikas....
* She will not venture to elaborate a rare raga ....&
* She will opt not to venture on detailed &speedy swara passages for a Raga like "Kiranavali" for "Etiyochanalu" where the raga swaroopam can be derived only from the available rare no of kriti(s) on that Raga.
* The artist will get fussy about the concert hall not fitting well with a good acoustics( from the perception of audience too !)

You know, people are trying to come up with unusual names now that everybody and his brother-in-law is named Rajeev or Rajesh or Rakesh.satyabalu wrote:

So, like Rohan (from Arohanam, meaning ascent), we may have an Iyengar name his son Alaap.
Thusly, you get Alaap Chari.
