Carnatic Krithi sung with an American Accent :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc0IAZJvHH8
Why is it that there is no azhutham in their singing. Half the words are swallowed. Is it the way to sing or a style developed to impress !!

What does this have to do with American Accent? I do not understand. When I saw the title, I thought this is about some NRI kid singing krithis.

I do not see any "American accent" in this rendition.
The rendition itself is rather interesting as it has been presented in a slightly lower kalapramanam than what is normally heard. I suppose that can be attributed to T Brinda's influence.

I suppose the way they articulate the syllables, softening consonants, you feel its American or Western style of articulation, calling it American accent.
Yeah, the singing is like light music, mimicking violin playing.
Anyway, the Carnatica brothers are just a big hype. Don't bother.

I think the key difference is that the volume is changed too many times, instead of maintaining a clear, carrying voice constantly.
While I really understand what you mean by 'mimicking violin playing', I think you're generalising 'violin playing' -- very understandably, but incorrectly.Yeah, the singing is like light music, mimicking violin playing.

It is definitely not Smt. Brinda's influence. Their school voice modulations are greatly different, this is the artificial modulation done in the name of "bhavam" or pseudo bhavam - patronized, honed and perfected by Maharajapuram Santhanam.
It is really ironical that Sashikiran talks about voice culture!! Concerts of his students uploaded on You Tube are testimony to the lack of any culture whatsoever.
Ganesh is too good on the Chitraveena, I wish he sticks to that and does not venture into vocal duet.. because of this duet bhajanai, rasikas rarely get to listen to his chitraveena. Great loss.

kalyani_ragam,
Apparently you are not impressed with the rendition of the song, while at the same time accusing the brothers of adopting "a style developed to impress". Is there a contradiction in what you're attempting to convey?
Else are you concerned that others might be (falsely) impressed by something that doesn't impress you?
Me thinks they know at least as much as we do about the importance of stressing (i.e. azhutham) etc etc. Would you like to check with the artists why they sung the song this way before you publish your agreement or disagreement of their performance?

Kalyani_ragam and ramamantra, please name the musicians who in your lofty opinions sing with azhuttam so that rasikas here may be enlightened. While you are at it, please also share your thoughts on who among the well-known musicians today aren't mere products of hype but are pure personifications of merit.
Arun-sri, the next time Shashikiran gets invited to present a talk or workshop on voice culture, he should perhaps pass along the opportunity to you. After all, you seem to know much more on this subject than most vidwans!
Get a life guys! Don't start a thread simply to malign these musicians who work day and night on/for their art.

Padavarnam: There are many many musicians who know what Carnatic music is and how to sing. If I have to provide a list, it will run into quite a few pages. <edited by mods> Again, well-known and meritorious musicians who are not product of hype list will also run into sheets. Btw, by stating that all the well-known musicians today are products of hype - are you not maligning all those hard working and highly talented musicians? You are actually maligning Sashkiran indirectly yourself by outwardly supporting. Isnt it a contradiction?padavarnam wrote:Kalyani_ragam and ramamantra, please name the musicians who in your lofty opinions sing with azhuttam so that rasikas here may be enlightened. Have you ever heard Brinda's style? If you have ever heard and known her style, you wld only have agreed with what Arunsri has mentioned. Maybe you belong to the arrogant young generation that has no idea of the depth of Carnatic music! And, talks about maligning. This is an open forum. Everybody has the right to express his or her opinion. Don't respond to a thread by simply suppressing others' views about things.
Get your knowledge right about basics and then venture to argue! Till then, get a life, Pada

This forum is being used to tarnish one particular individual's performance. Not acceptable and should be closed without further critiquing IMHO

Let us not get into noisy fights. Maintain respect for musicians and forum members.
If you have an axe to grind about any musician, take it somewhere else, not here. Calling any professional musician as not knowing what carnatic music is and how to sing it is rediculous. I have edited that out from Ramamantra's post.
I will lock this thread if any mud slinging continues.

Thanks for everyone's opinions, it appears the thread is not moving in the direction of objectivity. Locked.
