'ISAI SAARAL' - AIR Concerts

All India Radio has been recently organising music concerts at their 'multitrack recording studios' in Chennai. The programmes are open to public and broadcast subsequently. Prof T N Krishnan's Violin concert was broadcast yesterday (17.1.2012 - 10p.m.) in the series.

OST sings at the studios on 20 Jan.Frequent announcements are made over Chennai A and other frequencies for the advance information of rasikas. It is understood that the concerts are scheduled for Fridays at 5.30 p.m.

The following things need clarification:

1. Whether the concerts would take place all through the year?
2. Whether the timings of the live event (5.30 pm on Fridays) ensure good audience?
3. Do all Stations (in State capitals) organise such events?
4. whether select concerts in the series are carried in National programmes?

Good to hear about this series. What could be better than starting with the inniSai of TNK? OST to follow?

This was started by Chennai AIR as a 52-week long Friday Festival in the last week of Dec or so with Balamurali sir inaugurating it. It is also being telecast by DD on certain days.

Thanks to the power holiday system, my weekly off is now Tuesday and the only consolation is that these concerts are telecast on Tuesdays on DD from 8.30 to 10 am

Interesting VK (just realized that both of you have the same initials).

I wonder if the sequence was planned or if it was just spontaneous. It is always nice when the kOrvai ends with a meaningful pattern that matches a phrase in the kriti or the kalpana swaram leading into the tani.

It is also interesting that Sanjay took up this excellent but relatively less known Sivan kharaharapriya kriti "kAkka unakkirakkam illayA" as the main piece. He sometimes begins with the anupallavi line which carries a unique effect as well. Absolutely beautiful composition.

SS was superb. What stood out, apart from the intricately woven KH priya alapana was the unpredictable nadai change in the sarvalagu swaras that the violinist handled well, on and off. Introducing interesting kanakku in the easy going oru kalai Adi talam was a pleasant surprise.

Shri Varadharajan's response is mesmerising.....
