TNSESHAGOPALAN AT AYODHYA MANDAPOM ON 02 APRIL

Post by CRama »

Sangeetha Kalanidhi Madurai TN.Seshagopalan presented a top notch concert - in Ayodhya Mandapom as a part of the SREE RAMA NAVAMI SERIES on 2 April 2012. VV.Ravi, Thrissur Narendran, Madippakkam Murali (Ghatom) and Kannan (morsing) , were the accompanists. TNS Krishna provided vocal support. The concert was a thematic concert on Sree Rama befitting the occasion. Wow, what a concert it was! The list of songs.
Sree Raga varnam
Parabrahmaswaroopame-Gowlipantu, Arunachalakavirayar
Yochana- Durbar- Adi, Thyagaraja
Paramapavana rama-Poorvikalyani, Adi, Ramnad Sreenivasa Iyengar

Marugelara-Jayanthasree, Adi, Thyagaraja
Evvare Ramayya- Gangeyabhooshani, Adi, Thyagaraja
Enthavedukondu raghava- Saraswathi manohari- Thyagaraja
Abbabba raamanaamamu-Dhanysi, Adi, Bhadrachala Ramadas
RTP- Kalyani, Khanda Triputa,4 aksharam talli eduppu.
Slokam-Simhendramadhyamam, Begada,Saveri.
Hey Dayaluva- Sankarabharanm in Madhymasruti
Nanmayum selvamum- Slokam in Jonpuri
Ramamanthravajapiso-Jonpuri
Thillana-Bilahari
Mangalam.

TNS was in good form today, his voice keeping him in good stead. After the varnam in two speeds, he rendered the Ramavathara kriti of Arunachalakavi sans any swaram. Durbar was taken for the first alapana, It was done elaborately, the raga bhavam oozing from every syllable, containing the essential pidis of the ragam which was highly enjoyable. The durbar was aptly decorated with pearls and diamonds in the form of sangathis for Sree Rama and Seetha to sit and enjoy the concert. The song Yochana was rendered in the appropriate speed without too much hurry and was ornamented with elaborate swara prastharams. Many rounds of swaras resting at upper ri was a real treat. Next Poorvikalyani was taken up for elaborate treatment. What a wholesome and gratifying alapanai! The song chosen was Paramapavana Rama with the time tested sangathis rendered with precision. Neraval was done at an unusual place- Vanajaasanaanutha Vaaridhikanyaapriya. After the elaborate neraval, swarams in two kalams were rendered with very interesting patterns and the kuraippu resting at upper ga and lower ga alternatively in the pattern of instrumentalists was a great feat as well as feast. Quick round of swarams were rendered for Marugelara.

After the fillers, Kalyani was taken for elaboration. The raga was rendered showcasing the myriad colours of the ragam in a most aesthetic manner replete with bhavam and also including sruti bhedam to Sudhadhanyasi. The thanam was enjoyful and his quick thanams sounded like sitar to the discerning ears. The pallavi was coined on Rama- Daasaradhe maamplaya Dayanidhe Inakulathilaka in Khanda jathi Thriputa thalam- 4 aksharam after samam. Ragamalika swarams were rendered in Bahudari, Hindolam, Ahiri, Hamsanandi, Neelambari and Bhowli. Swarams in Hindolam and Hamsanandi were rendered by TNSKrishna exhibiting his vidwath as the son and disciple of his illustrious father. THe grand finale of swaram was executed by TNS. This was followed by the tail enders.. It was quite refreshing to hear the slokam Nanmayum selvamum in Jonpuri instead of Desh in which it is normally sung. It was a fitting prelude to Ramamanthrava.
VV Ravi 's violin returns were very apt and gave succinct raga alapanais. Thrissur Narendran embellished the concert with his non interfering playing and the Ghatam and Morsing artist also gave good support.
Rasika Ganesh by my side added to my enjoyment of the concert (If somebody sits with you and goes on criticizing the concert, it will spoil your mood of enjoyment as well).
I also want to make one observation. Generally people say that RTPs do not go well in temple concerts. In yesterday's concert, not a single person left the ooncert after start of the pallavi. So it confirms that if it is rendered well, audience will definitely enjoy. Overall a wonderful concert which lasted three and half hours.

The logic of not singing a RTP in temple has to do with a conveniant belief that one should render only compositions on deity . There are few occasions where vidwans and vidushis do render that . One has to appreciate the jAmbhavAn TNS singing a pallavi

I have not heard this gowlipantu krithi at all. Tx "Crama for attending shree rama "thematic concert and reporting the concert

Of late I go to the concerts of TNS more for the ideas than the execution. In that way this concert was something much more than what I could have asked for.The rendition of 'endavEdu'from the anupallavi was rendered with such a power that reminded me of VVSadagOpan.

The kalyANi AlApanai was the piece de resistance of the evening. The tAnam indeed sounded like sitAr which I told CRama there itself. The svarams for 'marugElarA' was much enjoyable.
