Sanjay - 2012/04/07 - Ramaseva mandali - Fort High School

Post by ranjanimalavi »

Sanjay subramanyan - Vocal
S Varadarajan - Violin
B Harikumar - Mridangam
S Venkataraman - Khanjira

1. Varnam - Evare - Sahana - PSI
2. Paraloka Sadhaname - Poorvi Kalyani - T (S)
3. Rama Ninnu Vina - Sankarabharanam - T
4. Mamava Pattabhirama - Manirangu - MD (RNS)
5. Neeye Sharanam Shanmukha - Kambhoji
6. Enduko Nee Manasu - Kalyani - T (RNS)
7. Thani

It was an excellent concert by Sanjay.
Sanjay was building up a nice set of swarams and the power went off.
But got to hear the reply from Varadarajan.
Sanjay sang the sankarabharanam pallavi with lot more sangathis in a slow tempo which was very good.
His manirangu was the best.
Fast paced kalyani was very good.
Varadarajan was as usual excellent in his replies.
Thani was decent.
Had to leave after the end of the thani.

Some minor observations.
Finally they have Arusai Arasu serving some food near the pandal.
But the organizers don't care about providing many toilets look like.
I think one toilet for more than 1000 people is too much.
They have also pushed the seats for Rs 100 ticket to the last and clubbed them with Rs 50.
Felt it was odd. Though the government has given a grant of 25 lakhs.

I have heard the same pallavi lines in Saaveri, at unnati when it was pouring few years back.
Atleast some consolation, for missing the remaining concert as I had to pick up my friend from train station.

I enjoyed the concert (Disclaimer: I like sanjay's music, concert planning and rendering very much in general). Few things that I noted:

1) Enjoyed the not-so-common ata tala varnam. Sanjay usually sings uncommon varnams.
2) PK swarams were nice - despite PowerAsura. I saw an RSM official running to get the generator running. Hopefully they can make that automatic.
2) Sankarabharanam pallavi sangathis were splendid. Almost seemed like a neraval :)
3) Enjoyed the manirangu alapana and neraval.
4) kalyani alapana was started in a unique manner - more knowledgeable rasikas can elaborate. Like the way different artistes start the alapana. Another recent one is Vijaya Siva's Samaja one.
5) Saveri alapana was delightful, but some parts of it was very energetic. However, I prefer a more sensitive handling of it. The pallavi was a nice one. I have heard another very nice pallavi (Kaveri rangan....) by Sanjay in the US and hoping a repeat :).
6) Overall a very nice concert, his voice was very cooperative. I really like the way he plans his concert. His mix of neravals, alapanas and swarams for songs. Uncommon krithis in common ragams. Always exciting to attend his concerts. However, I must add I felt the RSM concert did not have the extra lift I feel that his Samaja concerts have. Probably it is the venue or just my bias.
