Samdhi Live @ Carnegie Hall
Rudresh Mahantappa (Alto Saxophone) featuring Anand Anantha R. Krishnan (on mridangam), David Gilmore (electric guitar), Rich Brown (electric bass) and Gene Lake (drums).
Was a wonderful experience - a Mohanam main, if one can indeed pick a raga for the main piece, and the calculations seemed quite different to our normal tala system.
I really enjoyed the performance - and to me the most interesting aspects were:
The space afforded to each of the performers to showcase their skills. The musical value "stringed" instruments bring to a concert experience. The teamwork was pretty evident, and all the performers indeed took turns starring!
A couple words about Anand: he was so much at ease in this performance, was nicely picking the moments & momentum of the concert - given this is such a different genre. To me, his work with Gene Lake gave a "phenom" component to the concert - especially the gripping finale was almost like a sawal-jawab - with Rudresh followed by the stringed instruments having a back&forth and then the drums closing out!
