L-ji, thanks for the song list.

It was a very interesting concert by NSG. His voice was in good shape and his creative spontaneity took him to whimsical areas. Like his guru, he would think of singing swarams off the cuff at an arbitrary (but appropriate) location and then just do it.

I loved every bit of it.

The pallavi was a very complex viloma-chapu with an aditala cycle. I am as much a pallavi buff as anyone, but this was a tough one to put talam to. The ta-ka-di-mi | ta ki ta meter is not particularly intuitive and with a potential to transition into easier ratios than 7:4. NSG, however, was rock solid. He effortlessly did trikalam and all other kinds of linear-algebraic manipulations like he was folding pastry dough.

I think the intention was to have a tani after this, but it would have been murder on the mridangist (and the audience). So, NSG decided to have the tani after "Enna tavam". Yes, you read that right. And an elaborate tani it was, with an extensive khanda nadai exploration.

Tvm Balaji was having some trouble with his instrument. Consequently, his manodharmam was a bit inhibited throughout the concert. Jaishankar Balan played with his usual cheerfulness. His Nataikurinji returns were very nice.

Three things I uniformly love about NSG.
His stage presence and demeanor.
His unbridled flow of akarams.
His measured ease (I might have said that before).

Mahavishnu,
Loved your review as much as I love NSG's music!
'effortlessly did trikAlam like he was folding pastry dough' ;)
'his unbridled flow of akArams'!
'his measured ease'...
You have captured it all!

Lakshman,
Thanks for the song list.
A beautiful pallavi line he came up with: guru malaraDi paNi manamE, thiruvaruL peRa, piRavi thaLaiyaRa--essence of a line,in place of a whimsical
one.

Lji - Ramesh - thank you for the list and review...
Ramesh - speak for yourself, when you say that folding pastry dough is 'easy'. Now, 'falling off a log' is easy - maybe even universal! :-)

Fantastic even, if it has anything to do with boiling water (instant coffee, eggs, Maggi noodles, etc....the list is endless)! :)
