I have never heard shri Alleppey Venkatesan and that pushed me to hear him. The Ariyakudi bAni of a submain, main , RTP etc were not there in the concert .But there was significant mastery in his madhymakAla rendition where he connected ARI/KVN to
me. Plenty of mini-viruttams were sung by Shri venkatesan. Incidentally the concert theme was navarAthri ,every mini viruttam just came from his memory(no referring of books).

What a different fare--navarAtri or not! Viruttams of course mean that bhAvA and sAhityA are given importance. The commercial album I have of him (have not been to any of his concerts) tells me that his voice is suitable for emoting. The enta soukyamu (kApi) he sings there is one of the best I have heard of the kriti. Do you know of any new releases of his?

Sri Venkatesan is superb at viruttams. The only concert I heard of his was in 2000. I was disappointed at first since his voice took ages to warm up, but the fruits of patience were richly rewarded. A complex and detailed tODi RTP, followed by a 1/2 hour viruttam [IIRC it was excerpts from the vaDivuDai mANikka mAlA]. It was a wonderful experience.

6 years later, I was also partly disappointed as it took him 7th number to sing a rAga alApanai and even pantuvarAli a standard RNS of ARI only had a small neraval sketch.

But from the ranjani viruttam onwards , I just started suspecting may be his viruttam singing was his forte, especially asAveri and lalitha was wonderful. Just connect the two phrases of his asaveri "thulli thirindha manam" and lalitha "manakavalaikku ingu idam illai thazhvillai"in quick succession. Atleast I connected the effect of lalitha phrase is created by the cause of asAveri phrase.
