VIOLIN CONCERT OF PADMA KRISHNAN AND ANAND JAYARAM

Post by CRama »

A violin concert of the above artistes was held in Sastri Hall, Luz, on 19 May at about 6.00 PM. Srimati Padma Krishnan is a disciple of Smt Kanyakumari and Anand Jayaram is Padma's disciple, both settled in Trivandrum. Incidentally, Anand is the son of my music teacher from Trivandrum Shri Varkala CS Jayaram. The event was the release of a Violin CD of Anand Jayaram. There were many distinguished guests to grace the occasion, Smt K.S.Chithra, Thrissur Ramachandran, Smt.Charumathi Ramachandran,Valayapatti AR Malarvannan etc. The event was organised by Neelakanta Sivan Cultural Society in Velachery. The organiser is Shri.C.S.Sajeev, a musician and disciple of Shri Varkala C.S. Jayaram.

After the formalities connected with the release and felicitations, the concert started. Because I did not have any idea of reporting in Rasikas, I did not take any note. Hence I do not remember the accompanists. Sorry. The list of songs they played.
Varnam- Natakurinji.
Mahaganapathim- Nata
Sankari Sankuru- Saveri
Kaa Vaa Vaa- Varali
Om Namo Narayana-Karnaranjini
Kapali-Mohanam
Thani.

I had never heard the name of Padma Krishnan. Padma Krishnan's violin was exquisite. Her playing resembled her guru's style. Nata,Saveri,Varali,Karnaranjini and Mohanam ragams were played. Ragas were played elaborately clearly showing the thick and thin shades. Neraval was done for Syama krishna Sodari in Sankari sankuru. Elaborate swaras with Kuraippu played for Nata, Saveri and Mohanam, Swaras for Varali had interesting kanakku prayogams. For Mohanam, ragamalika swarams in Kanada, Anandabhairavi and one more ragam were played. Tonal quality was excellent. All the ragams and swaras were shared by the guru and disciple. She deserves appreciation for imparting pure classical music of high order to her student and shaping his career. Anand also played his alapanas, swaras with good imagination and good control. I understand that Anand is receiving advanced training under Kanyakumari. He has also completed a course on Sound Engineering. Given the right opportunities he is sure to make it big in the concert circuit. Rasikas will be benefitted if Vidwans and vidushis like Padma Krishnan are presented in Chennai music circle.

The accompanists played very well enjoying the violin and appreciating the main artistes. I was happy that I attended this concert and wanted to share my joy with my fellow rasikas.

Thank you for sharing :)

It seems that these are names we should try to remember. Perhaps they will get to play here again. If my poor brain cells do retain the names, I'll certainly take your recommendation should I see them in the listings.

For various historical reasons, the name Padma tends to catch my eye. To know another violinist of that name will be good :)

Would Padma Krishnan be the same as one Vaikom Padma who gave a delightful concert in Melbourne ten or so years ago

Yes. It is Vaikom Padma only. Very happy to know that she had given a delightful concert in Melbourne.
