GLAD TO SHARE ROHAN'S SECOND MA DEGREE

I am pleased to share with forum members the news that Rohan received his second Masters ( in Musicology) last week from the venerable Eastman School of Music. Earlier he had an MA in Ethnomusicology. In as much as he will be the first student of color to get a PhD next year from Eastman, it is also true that he is the first to get a double MA from that place! What was more heartening was that I got a chance to meet the President of the University of Rochester (of which Eastman is a part) and the Executive Dean. They both commented "Rohan is a special student for us. He has brought something very new and exciting to the campus through his ensemble, performances and the summer institute". Of course that "new and exciting" thing is South Indian percussion! It has really caught on and helped students in unexpected ways. One of Rohan's students recently applied to the famous Berklee College of Music and submitted a mridangam piece as one of the auditions. They liked it a lot and and have admitted him with a significant scholarship. Again, I am told this might be the first time that conservatory allowed an non-Western instrument to be submitted for audition.

Congratulations to Rohan on all his achievements. Many more to come, for sure!
To be talented is one thing, to be a teacher and a propagator of one's art is another.He is going to be an ambassador for CM, no doubt.
