It is::*mAtADabAradEnO*
meaning of the song::
Oh,my Lord, why should you not speak to me?[p]
Oh,lord of my life, you favoured my endearments
why do you not speak at once?[a.p]
The moonlight appears like sunshine to my eyes
the murmur of the bees frightens me, my Lord[c1]
The gentle breeze makes me go crazy,my Lord,
the luster of beauty in the body will fade away, my Lord[c2]
The arrow of cupid has struck my body, narahari of Namagiri,
is this propriety?[c3]

Re: mAthAda bAra dEno-Vidya Ratnakara Swamy
It looks like Namagiri & Namakkal are synonymous. I do know Namakkal which has a famous Hanuman shrine and nearby Narasimha temples are located on a hillock. The hillock might have been named as Namagiri and the composer must be referring to this Narasimha in the above composition. I am sure the famous Nadaswaram Vidwan Namagiripettai Krishnan must be from a different place than the Namagiri referred here.

I have a KVN's National Programme of Music( AIR) recording in which he has sung this song. The composer name is announced as Vidya Ratnakara Swamy!!! Since, it's from KVN- it must be correct.

Manjunath,
I have seen Bangalore Nagaratnamma's name as the composer of this song.
I also remember (very vaguely) reading in one of DVG's books that mentions Bangalore Nagaratnamma, One Mr. Narahari Rayaru and narahari rAyana guDDa (also called Mount Joy) in Basavanagudi, Bangalore. All this going back to Bangalore of early 1900s.
I have a feeling all this has some connection to this particular song.
I should be able to locate the book and that particular chapter and clarify what I am talking about.

Sreeni- I very well know Narahari Gudda you are talking of near Mount Joy( Sunkenhalli, Basavangudi).Sreeni Rajarao wrote:Manjunath,

This is called "Nahahari Rayana Gudda". But on this hillock a Subramanya temple exists in which annual HarO Hara is celebrated with much pomp and devotion. This is a very famous Murugan temple in Bangalore. Tamilians who are unable to visit Palani will visit this shrine. This is a very old temple.
Unfortunately, there is no Vishnu shrine here and i may not agree with your suggestion.

Not much of Shringara Rasa, but the reference to cupid is enough to negative the opinion that it is composed by a sanyasi. The author must have had the penname of Vidyaratnakara or Narahariraaya.

Srini Rajarao avarige.
In the link provided by PBji,
the name of the composer is mentioned as Vidyaratnakara swamy and not Vidyaratnakara tIrtharu.
You can try this link to refresh the memories of Naraharirayana gudda

I think the question about the composer is still not answered convincingly.
However, I have enjoyed reminiscing about the time I spent around narahari rAyana (rather, rAyara) guDDa, thanks to this thread!
The writing by DVG that I had mentioned earlier is the one provided in the link in post #20 by Smt Savitri (Thank you!)
Manjunath, your post # 12 has brought back many memories of the place!

Re: mAthAda bAra dEno-Vidyaratnakara Swami
Sreeni - Both of us are born & brought up in Basavangudi and how can we ever forget- " Kadle kai Parishe " during Karthika maasa in the Big Bull Temple; the mentioned " HarO Hara " in Narahari Raayara Gudda during the tamil month of Aadi and the sun rays falling on the Shiva Linga in Gavi Gangaadhareswara Swami in Gavipuram on Makara Sankranthi Day !!!
During "HarO Hara" festival in Narahari Rayara Gudda, the Subramnya/Murugan temple used to play KB Sundarambal's Murugan Songs with Loud Speakers. Devotees from different parts of Bangalore used to walk all the distance to this temple carrying offerings to god wearing yellow robes and chanting " HarO Hara".
Listen to one such famous sung -
Thanithirundhu-Smt. KB Sundarambal...

Thanks for your memories abt DVG's writing. I enjoyed every bit of the link provided by Smt Savithri.
I suggest you to please make enquiries further in Vyasaraja Mutt and get more details abt. Vidyaratnakara Swami from your contacts. We love to know more abt him.
Smt Savithri - Thank You Once again for all your contributions to this thread as well as in providing the above link of DVG's writing on Bangalore Nagarathnamma. We started somewhere and landed some where else.

Thanks for mentioning the kadalEkAyi parishe!
It was told that one can eat and digest all the kaDalEkAyi eaten on that specific day!!!
This reminds me of the permeating aroma of coffee seeds being fried on rainy evenings
near the Ramamandira house holds in N.R colony and the freshly prepared batch of Om
biscuits near Shanta Stores.
You can check this link for further info on Bengaluru NAgaratnammanavaru.::

Re: mAtADabAradEnO
Bangalore Nagaratnammal was the first to cut a 78 rpm record; of this song. It was very popular, and she came to be identified with this song. There is story about this song, similar to Dhanammal's sakhi prANa and smarasundaranguni story vis-a-vis Dharmapuri Subbarayar.
It has been suggested that Nagaratnam herself composed the song, when there had been a misunderstanding between her patron Narahari Rao and her. This song was sung when he visited her baithak at the Naraharirayara guDDA shrine after a long time. The lyric suits this story. [won't you talk to me..O narahari etc.. ]The rest of the song has the usual protestations of love as seen in most sanskrit and sanskrit-inspired poetry.
The story is eminently believable, since Nagaratnam was highly literate, was known to have spoken and written very well in at least four languages, won medals and accolades from contemporary scholars for her literary accomplishments as well as her musical talent.
She produced a critical edition of muddupazhani's telugu treatise rAdhikA-sAntvanam and an impressive text on advaita called pancIkarana-bhautika-vivEka-vilakkam. She knew enough sanskrit to compose stortras and nAmavaLI-s on tyagarAja. Surely she could have composed a simple song such as this one.
nAmagiri is indeed the name of nAmakkal. It is common for girls to be named nAmagiri lakshmi or even nAmagiri, in honour of the ksEtra. This Goddess incidentally, was the ostensible source for Srinivasa Ramanujan's mathematical talents. The reference in the song may be because it was an important narasimha ksEtra, sung by dASa-s like purandara.[vide simharUpanAda srihari]

kirti Ji,
Thank you for solving the puzzle.
Intrigued by the ankita in mAtADabAradEnO I did a bit of search and found that Sri Narahari TirTharu was the second direct ShiShya of SrI MaDhvAcAryaru and composed some dEvaranAmagaLu.Only one of them is available and it is said to be the first dEvaranAma in kannada.hariyE idu sariyE.Two more are there *yentu maruLade nAnentu maruLAde* and *tiLikO ninnoLage nInu* but no text is found.
