Arvind.brahmakal,
Hope the concert was enjoyable. Is it possible for us to hear a sampling? If she sang one of my songs, that too please! Thanks!

Although I could not attend this concert under review, I heard Sumitra's CD on Smt.Arasi's songs- I think this is the third one in the series. I was quite impressed by the good Tamil, broad vocabulary, appropriate non- repetitive usages based on the context and natural unforced fit of eduhai/ monai in the sahitya. I am normally quite disappointed by many popular present day composers, especially when there are words like "thindaaadinadhu" or "dhushtaththanathirkkor elleye illai", etc., The people who set these wonders to music must have had a real challenge :)

Also, Sumitra has sung brilliantly with the sahitya clearly audible and good music. I especially liked the hindusthani touch in the kalyani and the brief and lovely steep opening build up in hindolam for the tail piece which was a "Arasi Bhajan". All the other items are also very well rendered. I will try to get the other two cds as well, one more by sumitra and the other by neela mami.

Is the text of the sahitya available anywhere on the net? Then more people can sing these songs in concerts.

Thanks for your post, kssr. Glad that you like some of my songs.
You can catch Sumitra and Neela Ramgopal on some youtube bits. The same KalyANi (!), that karnATaka dEvagAndhAri (chinnak kaiyai virithenniDam) on the CD you have, and Neela Ramgopal's hamsadhvani (kuRai thIrppAn guhan) and kharaharapriya (SivanAr naDanam kaNDEn). They are from the concerts they gave after CD 2 and 3 releases--both in the serene Ragasudha Hall.
When the song vandAlum varAviDinum came to me, I also noticed the hindusthAni touches and asked Sumitra: did I sing it to you in kalyANi or yamunA kalyANi :) Being no expert, I wondered, of course.

A Pleasant Concert !

Sumitra Nitin chose the royal darbar varna “chalamela” that set the tone of the concert. Vinayaka Ninnuvina in Hamsadhwani was rendered in madhyama kAla and was rounded off with brisk swaras. Muttuswami Deekshitar’s “pavanAtmaja Agachha” in Natta was rended with finesse which was a nice prelude to the sub main Khamas. Some lovely phrases of the melodious rAga were followed by the eternal Thyagaraja krithi “seethapathe”. Nereval at “prema chuchi” was rendered with aplomb followed by some melodiously rendered intricate swara patterns.

Kalyani’s rAga bhAva was profoundly presented in the viruttam “ninnantha thandeyu” of Purandara Dasa .This was followed by a depthy rendition of “nimma bhagya doddado”. Thyagaraja’s “vinarAda na manavi” in DevagAndhari was presented with good sense of lyrical clarity.

Sumitra chose madhyamavathi for detailed delineation. It was an evocative presentation of the rAga with some beautiful phrases in different octaves. Shyama Shastri’s “pAlinchu kAmakshi” was rendered at a desirable pace that lent colour to the composition. An intense nereval at “kAntamaku” was followed by some innovative swara patterns. TaniAvarthanam by Sudarshan enhanced the overall appeal of the concert.

The concert was concluded with couple of beautiful songs in behAg (Periyasami Thooran ), hindola bhajan (shyam aaye Arasi's compostion ) and Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar’s purvi tillana.

Vittal Rangan, the young violinist, lent nice support and shows good promise. Sudarshan Chakravarthy on the mridangam played with verve and finesse.

Overall, an enjoyable concert ! :)

It certainly was an enjoyable concert. Just posted the concert details here. Your composition in hindOla was beautifully rendered by Sumitra. My apologies that the recording disc got full just prior to Shyam Aaye...however, we enjoyed the composition and the rendition !
