hastasya bhUshaNam dAnam , satyam kaNtasya bhUshaNam
shrOtrasya bhUshaNam shAstram, bhUshaNaihi kim prayOjanam?
Meaning:The ornament for the hand is charity, the ornament for the throat is(speaking) the turth
The ornament for the ear is (listening to)shAshras, what use are the other ornaments?
I find these sentments reflected in this song.

A small digression::
Long back in the early fifties,in my highschool days, a selection of some poems from Palkuriki Somanatha, Someshwara shataka was prescribed for study.
One of the stranzas of this collection had these lines.
ravi AkAShake BhUShaNam rajanigA candram mahABhUShaNam
kuvaram vamShake BhUShaNam sarasigamBhOjAtangal BhUShaNam
................................................haraharA SrI cennasOmEShwarA.
The sun is the ornament of the sky,the moon is the great ornament of the night sky
the son is the ornament of the clan,lotus is the ornament of the pond
...............................................haraharA SrI cennasOmEShwarA
It is a pity that I remember only these lines.

Very nice translation, of a very nice song..

The SOmEshwara shataka was by HuLigere SOmanAtha, a 15th century scholar. Palkuriki SOmanAtha was a different person . He is a 12th-13th Century vIrashaiva scholar, who lived in telugu land, and wrote in kannaDa and sanskRta, giving many interesting anthropological details of his times (including descriptions of food and music) in his PanditArAdhya caritE.

What a delightful thread this has become!

Smt Savitri has provided great value (as always!) with her inputs!

I enjoyed listening to Sri TNS's version!

As a side note, reading about Someshwara Shataka, reminded me about some verses we studied in 5th grade kannaDa book that were titled Someshawara Shatakadinda.

After much scratching of my brain, I have manged to remember the first two words
"prajeyam pAlisballoDAtanarasam .................................. "

I am trying hard to recall the rest of the words! I will keep working on it!

I had a teacher Sri. U Govinda Upadyaya who was from the Old school (He was probably Sixty years old when he taught us 5th grade and he retired at the end of that school year) and he used to sing all the poems as he was teaching us! And, this particular one was very musical, and I had learned to sing this as he used to sing.

One day at home, I was singing this song, totally unaware that I had interested a small audience around me. And, they had been impressed with my singing! (Or, so I thought!)
I remember my Father complimenting me on the clarity of words in my singing - I don't remember him complimenting me on my singing itself!

The splitting of the sentences is inappropriate in some places and hence the translation is different. Some corrections also incorporated.

kṛṣṇaḿ lokaya locanadvaya ; harer gacchāńghriyugamālayaḿ ; jighra ghrāṇa mukundapādatulasīḿ ; mūrdhan namādhokṣajam ||

The translation is thus :

( Hey manuja ! ) On ( or with ) the tongue, praise the glories of Lord Kesava, the enemy of Muraasura: ; in ( or with ) the mind , worship the Lord of Sri ( consort of Lakshmi ) . with hands , serve Lord Acyuta. with the two ears , hear the stories ( good deeds ) of Krishna . with eyes , look out and concentrate upon Sri Krishna. with the feet ! go to the temple of Lord Hari. with the nose , smell the tulasi buds on Lord Mukunda's feet. with the head ( or hey head ), bow down to Lord Adhokshaja.

The sloka is in "vidhiling" form i.e. order or recommendation.

There is quite a bit of underlying philosophy which has been amply brought out by Purandaradasa, Bhadrachala Ramadas and Thyagaraja in their compositions in very much simpler terms understandable to common man ( paamara ). Dikshitar's songs can be categorised at a slightly higher level in this respect.

1. This verse is in the shArdUla-vikrIDita metre, which can't have a guru [long syllable] at the tenth position of each quarter. acyutam would disrupt the metre.

2. You have used the wrong nAma for each act prescribed. I have appended an anvaya [prose order] to better understand the original.

3. The verb is in the lOT lakAra [imperative] not vidhiliń. The latter form would be kIrtayEH, bhajeH etc.



jihve kīrtaya keśavaḿ mura-ripuḿ ceto bhaja śrīdharaḿ
