harimau,
Just saw the kApi, uh, coffee video of kAmbhOdi, nay Colombia--and what a blast! Coorg with tabla and an occasional string stirring of the sitAr! It holds one's attention, in the same manner as old mega screen movie titles.

As for the visuals in CM concerts today, the stage decor folks are getting carried away, it seems--thanks to movies and TV for that :(
Tinsel ( Christmas only) and odd combinations of colors in drapery (distracting), and worse--stick-on you-name-it in squares, artificial flowers littering the walls and floor--to the point that you don't even mind the banners of sponsors. How I wish they would go back to simplicity and realize that less is better.
Related stuff, I hope. I better stop before I'm accused of deviating from the topic.

Harimau: It is pretty cool. Quite an innovative interface for playing around with musical possibilities without getting out of tune or out of rhythm. I know you do not warm up to these kinds of things especially in the CM context but you still propagate such things. Much appreciated :) Thanks for the link.

Let me use this opportunity to write up something which I have been meaning to write for a few weeks.

I have an iPhone app called 'figure' ( 99 cents ) which is a lot of fun in a similar vein. It is not exactly the same user interface but the concepts are similar. You are given, say, 2 measures - 8 beats, into which you can layout notes by swiping your finger across the screen. One experiment I like to perform is to see how much variation in music I can produce with just 1 note. Similar to what Ilayaraja has done with that one song with three notes but with just 1 note. There is a bit of the monotonic aspect as one would expect ( it is literally mono swara ) but there are so many 'surrounding' variations that still make it sound like music ( not CM ).

Such variations are:
- As Ilayaraja did with the three note song, when I say 1 note, it is one swara but I use the same note in different octaves which reduces the monotony.
- The bass ( chord ) sound using the same swara. Yes, one note chord(!), using different registers as above.
- The timbre of the main instrument and the bass instrument
- How that one note main line and the base line are divided in time, varying from 1 to 16 sub beats per beat ( speed, naDai ).
- The drum sounds with a whole lot of variations.

The program allows me to set it up with just 1 note and then add 2, 3,...7 notes and it will incorporate them automatically. It is a lot of fun to compare and contrast how the music evolves with such additions.

If I hit across something that sounds pleasing, I will share.
