Madurai Mani Iyer, one of the most admired Carnatic musicians of all time had a unique inimitable style of simplicity and perfection in his presentations. He is known for his vast and deep knowledge of the technical aspects of our music system. Personally everyone who had come in contact with him were stunned by his humility, sincere friendship, respect for the audience and organisers and universal love to all fellow human beings. In a year long programme, his Birth Centenary Year - 2012- is being celebrated by carnatic music rasikas all over the world. Nadasurabhi dedicates this concert to the memory of this musical legend. Padma Bhushan Sangita Kalanidhi. Sri.T.V.Sankaranarayanan is the prime disciple and nephew of Sri Madurai Mani Iyer.

Three Day Karnataka Vaibhava on 17th, 18th and 19th August 2012
Karnataka possesses a huge treasure of highly talented Carnatic musicians. Also, Karnataka has produced some of the greatest vaggeyakkaras, lyricists, instrumentalists and musicians. Nadasurabhi, with the intention of bringing this vast musical knowledge bank to the rasikas is conducting a three day Karnataka Vaibhava Festival where top artists will be presented. More details will be announced shortly.

I've decided to attend Maami's concert since I haven't heard her in ages, but if anyone attending TVS maama's concert can provide us with a recording, it would be a great!

No rains at IHA, Koramangala. Concert of Sri.TVS was just brilliant. Totally packed- inside and outside the hall. Chairs and jamakkaalams filled every inch including stage. No one was disappointed. Sri.TVS made a moving speech about his mama . The MMI centenary was a brief but well executed programme. Then the concert- Wah. TVS, I understand is closer to 70 than 60. The stamina and power he is able to generate is still the same as I have heard him 25 years back. The team CN Chandrasekhar, Arjun Kumar and Udupa also gave a big boost to the overall programme. Will list songs later if no one else does

Yes he did share a lot of his memories about his legendary uncle, and from the age of 6/7, he remembers his uncle's each concerts it seems.

He has composed a small poem/Virutham on his uncle and he recited it there (sorry can't recollect the lines).
It was a wonderful evening.
Special mention needs to be given to TVS's son Mahadevan,he was very good throughout.
Accompaniments also were pretty good.

Sri.TVS in his speech was quite moved when he talked about his maama. I was also personally quite touched. He mentioned how he had the "bhaagyam" to live under the same roof right from his birth to the time of his uncle passing away, how he had the chance to be close to all the senior vidwans of that time (he listed- I don't remember) who used to visit his house. How he used to call him in singular- Nee, Vaa, Po, etc., How as a boy he used to go to each one of his uncle's concerts, probably because of the car rides! He also spoke about his father Sri.Vembu Iyer who sacrificed his own career and was dedicated to the service of his guru MMI . How MMI used to teach him to respect the audience, composers and the organisers. Also about MMI telling him to learn from other stalwarts like Ariyakkudi Iyengar vaaL, instead of just from him. Short and nice.

Also, for most songs, he related to the way his uncle used to sing. For eg in Karaharapriya TVS started Chakkani raja on the higher octave and asked Mahadevan to sing on the lower octave. He mentioned that he used to sing on the higher octave when he started the kriti with MMI.

It was definitely a memorable experience.

The question follows that 'What gives him the power and stamina for such open throated singing' Did anyone attend the Gayana samaja TVS concert on 17th?

MMI passed away in the 60s and Mahadevan is an 80s product The link is their music. If you listen to the final long string of swaras that M sang in Karaharapriya, there is a distinct resemblance of MMI (and of course TVS) style.

Will definitely try to post the full list tomorrow. The elaborate pieces of the day were Bhuvaneshwariya in Mohanakalyani, Rajuvedala in Todi and Kaana kankodi in Kamboji.
