Children's songs

Post by ninjathegreat »

I'm looking for some childrens songs with a Carnatic base... More specifically, two songs, "kOl kolanE kol" and "eTTaDi kucchi kuLLE swAmi"...

Here's how my grandmother, Smt Parvaty Sadasivan, sang a few phrases; I took this video a few years ago. My grandmother was 89 then.

Any help with the words would be appreciated!

cheers

V.V.Sadagopan has composed many songs for children based on carnatic music. They have been released as ThyagaBharathi songs. These songs are small, easy songs with good morals for children and the tunes are catchy and folksy . I do not know where you can get them. You can google and find where you can buy them.

Ninja,
You are back after a long time!
You now have a child (chidren?) it seems. You were kind enough to invite us all to your wedding, I remember!

Your grandmother must be fun!
I have heard kOlu kOlannak kOlE, but do not remember any words. Somehow,in my childhood, I thought it was a kannaDa song! I will ask around.
eTTaDik kuchukkuLLE, I remember the rest of the line, and that's about it!
eTTaDik kuchukkuLLE nAn eppaDik kuDiyiruppEN?

@maduraimini: Thanks a lot for the info! I will look for them.

@arasi: yes, it has been a while, hasn't it! Work kinda focused me elsewhere. And you guessed right, I have a month old doll of a girl, Navya, in California! It's funny how the need to sing to children pushes us to find those in the recesses of our memory! How are you doing?

My grandmother used to say that they were 20 children - siblings and cousins - at all occasions, and they had a cook who would write plays and compose songs for them, which the kids would perform before the elders.. She would sing some songs and some catchy phrases from those plays ("chI chi pO pO en kaN mun irundhu pAvi duSta kaikEyI!")... She is a lot of fun even now, inspite of her age (92)..

I have some catching up to do in these forums :)
the eTTaDik kuchukkuLLE from what my grandma sang:

eTTaDik kuchukkuLLE swAmi nAn ethanai nAL iruppEn? thaga thaga paLa paLa sa ri ga ma pa da ni sa sa ni da meTTukolE kolE..

Congratulations to you and your wife on the arrival of Navya! I bet your grandmother is thrilled to hear of her arrival. When you take her to India, she will sing to her and delight you more!

Looks like baby time at Rasikas.org. Rajesh has his sweet baby daughter now at whose command he's prepared to fetch anything she wishes from anywhere!
The next one to make the news on the forum--will be a boy or a girl, I wonder ;)

@arasi: thank you for your wishes :) This is my grandmother's 7th great grandkid and 2nd great grand daughter!! And, yes, this is her only greatgrand daughter who is of fully tamil heritage, so I'm sure she will sing to her :):)

Are you still composing away? Do let me know if you come San Francisco-side...

@Pratyaksham Bala: Thank you so very much! Now, I know the tune of the first line of eTTaDi kuccukkuLLE , but I am lost after the 2nd paragraph. Or are they are different tunes?
