Pallavi Darbar 3 Aug to 5th Aug at MFAC
Pallavi Darbar, a unique festival dedicated to the art of Ragam, Tanam, Pallavi singing, is all set to take place between the 3rd of August to the 5th of August at Mylapore fine arts club. This event organized by Carnatica in association with Sri Parthasarathy swami sabha has been receiving overwhelming response from the rasikas for the last two years. This 3 day event is conducted with an intention to make art of pallavi singing and the challenges on the artiste known to the carnatic fans and also to foster and encourage pallavi singing with great creative abilities. Reckoned as the ultimate challenge to a carnatic musician’s creativity, “on the spot pallavi singing” will be the highlight of this festival. This year, Pallavi exponent Sri J.Venkatraman will be honored with the award “Pallavi Chakravarthy” and will be felicitated by Cleveland Sri V.V.Sundaram on the inaugural day. There is also a special lecture demonstration on the intricacies of Pallavi construction by Sri J.Venkatraman. Artists from different parts of the country will be displaying their expertise in pallavis in thematic concert presentations showcasing various types of pallavis. The festival would feature a mix of popular and young artists starting from Bangalore T.S.Satyavati, Sangeetha Sivakumar, Abhishek Raghuram, Palghat Sriram to Bharat Sundar, Ramakrishnan murthy and Vishnudev Namboodiri.
In the past, court musicians used to challenge one another with pallavis that were like riddles. On similar lines, in this festival a pallavi puzzle testing the Carnatic IQ of musicians will be conducted. A group of 2-3 members per team is allowed to take part in this contest. There is no entry fee to participate in the contest, registrations for which will be open till 11 AM on the 5th of August. Registrations can also be sent via email to [email protected]. The contest is a measure of one’s ability to decode a pallavi on the spot and answer relevant questions on it. Winners will be awarded cash prizes of Rs.5001 for the first place, Rs.2500 and Rs.1000 for the second and third place respectively. This contest would take place in the august presence of experts, Smt.Suguna Purushothaman and Sri J.Venkatraman.
This season, a pallavi bank will be launched which will stay as a repository of pallavis. Professional musicians, learners of carnatic music or rasikas can contribute recordings of known and new pallavis with the notations and mail it to [email protected]. The creator of the best new pallavi lines and the contributor of maximum number of pallavis shall be awarded a cash prize of Rs.5000 or 100 USD. Contributors from across the world can send in their entries.
K.N.Shashikiran, founder, Managing Trustee, Carnatica, who conceptualized this event says,”This festival shall serve as an ideal treat for the pallavi buffs, music students and connoisseurs of music.” Entry for this festival is open to all.
