Sangeetha Kalanidhi 2012

Post by Sundara Rajan »

It is that time of the year when we discuss prospective awardee of Sangeetha Kalanidhi. Let us start our suggestions/recommendations with mine for T.V. Ramachandran. I have mentioned this also in the Vidvan-Vidushi section about TVR .

Sri TVR would be an apt choice. Other contenders include: Sri TV Gopalakrishnan, Sri VV Subramaniam and Guruvayur Dorai,

My vote also for TVG.

Apart from his massive accomplishment, he will also carry off all functions with aplomb. In fact... with multiple plombs!

Any of the four Mohan listed would be a great choice. But I'm also very much on the TVR boat.

TVG is older and most deserving one. Except for Umayalpuram, I have not personally listened to a better mridangam vidwan than TVG. But the catch is that he spread himself thin, with vocal (not a great performer in my humble taste and inadequate knowledge), teaching ( a good guru) and other activities of mixing and matching various genres. If I am not mistaken, such mixed achievers are not MA's normal choice. But why not? It is now TVR or TVG.

kssr: Music Academy can very easily recognize the multifaceted nature of the musician as one of the reasons for the SK award. Does the MA publish any official proclamation about the Sangeetha Kalanishi designate? I thought so. If they do, we can check if they have used that angle in the past.

Would the MA award it to another mridangam artiste this year? I thought they alternated between percussion artistes and vocalists/violinists.

All of them are worthy choices, no doubt. Not that I have any eligibility to comment on their vidwat anyway. :)

Always this is a million dollor question. IMHO the yard stick would be based on their contribution to CM by way of Lec dems and other associated activities besides producing sizable disciples. Pappu Rao the key man [kalapramanam] can throw some light on this.

I was going down the list of recipients for the SK. I did not see vidwan Lalgudi G Jayaraman ever being given the Sangita Kalanidhi. ????????

Lalgudi was overlooked for many years. Ten years after T.N.Krishnan was awarded SK in 1980, they offered SK to Lalgudi in 1990 who refused because he felt miffed at being overlooked for many years, especially when lesser musicians had received the award before it was offered to him. That's the story. Ultimately he was persuaded to preside over the sadas of 1990 and give away the SK to his namesake D.K.Jayaraman.

There is a humorous story RaviSri would narrate about this. There was it seems a character called 'Auto Parts' Kannan who would attend the December season regularly. He was full of humour. This is taken from a write-up about Kannan by RaviSri:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some of Kannan’s jokes were highly original and became the talk of the town. In the year 1990, the Academy wanted to honour Lalgudi Jayaraman with the Sangita Kalanidhi. But the violinist refused to accept it so late in his career. The Academy then nominated D. K. Jayaraman. Kannan developed on this. He said that supposing D.K. Jayaraman had also refused, then the Academy would have asked Tiruvengadu Jayaraman to accept the honour. Now if Tiruvengadu also refused, they would have asked Sirgazhi Jayaraman. If Sirgazhi Jayaraman also refused the Sangita Kalanidhi, the Academy would have nominated Canteen Jayaraman, the caterer at the Narada Gana Sabha for Sangita Kalanidhi. Kannan added that the Academy had chosen the name ‘Jayaraman’ for the award and went about looking for people answering to that name. It was a telling commentary on the bureaucratic and couldn’t care less attitude of the Academy. Kannan circulated this joke on the first day of the 1990 season. Before long, the whole music season in Madras was reverberating with this joke. Officialdom was livid with rage, but could do nothing other than wring its collective hands in despair.

I liked the joke . Apart from the above , in March 2008 Lalgudi Jayaraman also got a special Lifetime achievement award arranged by Music Academy. This was more in line to reward shri LGJ to make up for the loss of sangeetha kalanidhi.
