* Nice way to recap my initial learning with correct words &diction.
* After a longtime I rehearsed these Geethams.
* What a Ragabhava embedded therein. Never late to appreciate!
* How about another no in Anandabhairavi "raveme makura?"
* May suggest a separate thread for Geetham ,lakshana geetham, varanam&their varieties?

Re: Meaning of Kamboji & Anandabhairavi Geethams
Thanks a million Rsachi. I'll let you know if i get the meaning of Karihara MadhyE...I would also appreciate if any other rasika can help us with this
@Satyabalu: Indeed it's a really nice way to recap our basic lessons...I am teaching small kids now and I feel it would be a boon to know the meaning of the song before teaching it to them! Geetham books years ago came alongwith the meaning of the song...These days, the books do not include the meanings. I feel ditto about your 3rd point...
In fact, i was wondering if this would be the right forum to request for the meaning of Geethams. I second your suggestions about starting a separate thread for these...
Regards,
Vidya

Re: Meaning of Kamboji & Anandabhairavi Geethams
Rsachi, marALa is a swan..several similes are used to describe the dEvi's gait - if it is majesty that the composer is seeking to convey, then, she is kunjara gamanI, and if it is grace that is to be invoked, she is marALa gamanI, or hamsa gamanI, one who moves with the grace of a swan.
karihara madhyE - I wonder if it is harihara madhyE - the one who is equal to both Hari and hara perhaps?

Yes rshankar..you're right I think. Hamsavahini is an epithet of Saraswati as she rides a swan.
I was playing on the several meanings possible and trying to use kari as elephant.
To quote Monier Williams, the origin of marALa is mR=soft and tender.
By the way I checked two textbooks, both say kariharamadhyE.

Re: Meaning of Kamboji & Anandabhairavi Geethams
kari - elephant; hara - killer; madhya - waist
kari-hara-madhye means one who has a waist slender like that of a lion. Parallels can be found in the expressions simha-kaTi and simhendra-madhyama

So then, finally, should we all take kari-hara-madhye as one who has a waist slender like that of a lion?

Lakshmanji thanks for that info about the composers. Who are the composers of the other popular geetams/swarajatis? I think Purandaradasa has composed the ones in malahari. Mohana (vara veena) is by Appiah Dikshitar I think. What about geetham in Suddha Saveri and the Swarajatis in Bilahari (rara venu) and Khamas (sambasiva)?

vara veena mrudupani is by sri purandara dasa
It is called "Lakshmi Geetham"
lot of poeple think this geetham is on saraswathi
I was told Lakshmi also plays the veena
the phrase "varadha priya ranganyaki" tells this is on Lakshmi.
any corrections welcome
regards

I have learnt 'Sri Ramachandra' in Bhairavi. But I do not know whether it is a slokam converted into a song bec. I have heard it being sung as one before songs on Rama.

Re: Meaning of Kamboji & Anandabhairavi Geethams
Punarvasu - srIrAmacandraH, sung as the bhairavi gitam; is indeed a stOtra verse, tuned into a geetam. This is true of other stotra-turned geetams as well. the nATTai 'amarI-kabarI-bhAra' is a verse from appayya dIkSitar's treatise kuvalayAnandaM, that has been tuned by some later musician.
All attributions of gItams to Appayya dIkSitar are unsubtantiated.
Lakshmanji,
It is interesting that AmarI-kabarI-bhAra is attributed to gurumUrthi shAstri. What is the source for this, please? Do you have any publication exclusively devoted to his songs??

The shlokam 'srirAmacandraH shrita parijata' used to be printed on
marriage invitations.
The geetam 'jaya karuNA sinDhO' is a lakshana geetam of raga dhanyasi.
'Lambodara lakumikarA' is the first line of the geetam of the same name
'Sri gaNanATha sindurAvarNa' is the second line.
