I always bow down to Hanuman (the lord of Prana), who fulfills the desires of those who bow down to him, who is always engaged in serving Rama;
(him who is)The source of life breath that is described in yoga as prAna, apAna, vyAna etc.
Who is the life element in all creatures, who pleased the incarnate Adishesha (Lakshmana),
One who was respected by sages like Bharadwaja, one who is the reservoir of knowledge;

(i bow down to him) who is the foremost among the valiant, born to Anjana,
Blemishless, and one who carries Vishnu in his heart,
One whose sweet words pleased Sita,
One who is adept at destroying enemies, one who is magnificent, so knowledgeable about Rigveda,
One who is delighted by raga Ranjani, worshipped by Indra and others,
One who gave life with Sanjivani to Lakshmana, son of Sumitra

Where is the reference to "one who is the reservoir of knowledge " ?

Bharati kaLatra means one who is married to the Goddess or Shakti by name Bharati.

Need some clarification here:

hanumAn is referred to here as bharatI kaLatra and we also have in purandaradasa's
song "bhAratI dEviya nene nene" that bhAratI is "mArutanardhAngi", but hanumAn is considered a brahmacAri.

Some schools of thought also deem hanumAn an avatAra of shiva. Is this the correct way to explain the apparent
contradiction given that lakshmi, saraswati and durgA are all considered forms of the same entity? (e.g. in mahishAsura
mardini stOtra all three are praised in different verses)

Thanks

Sir, I am looking at three Purandara Dasa kritis on the same page (AraLumallige's compilation) where bhArati is referred to as the wife of Shiva=Hanuman. So bhAratIkaLatra as Parvati's husband or Shiva=Hanuman would be the obvious meaning we could take even in this song and move on.

But I prefer to take the larger meaning of bhAratI=art/speech/knowledge and kaLatra=citadel, fortress, since bhAratI as a deity commonly refers to Saraswati not Parvati, and kaLatra normally means female consort ( we can get round this by translating it as 'one whose wife is BhAratI'). Still that is a tricky one, especially since:
A) Hanuman is a bachelor in rAmAyaNa, and
B) only in later works after Valmiki is he referred as the incarnation of Shiva.

All this is as per my limited knowledge!

It is well known that Hanuman is referred to as Vaayukumaara: . Vaayu is one of the panch bhootas i.e. the five natural elements of the creation. The Lord of the elements is Shiva. Hence Hanuman is incarnation of Shiva. Regarding the marital status , Hanuman was a bachelor in Ramayana until the fag end. But he meets his son Makaradhwaja in the netherworld of Mahiravana. The son was born out of inadvertent pregnancy caused by Hanuman. Later in other versions of Ramayana, prevailing in other countries like Malaysia, Thailand, etc., Makaradhwaja marries the daughter of Vibhishana and ruled the combined kingdom comprising the lands of India, Lanka , Indonesia, Java and Australia. As per Madhwa philosophy only Hanuman is said to be married to the divine force called Bharati which also means divine halo or energy. In parts of Andhra Pradesh, Hanuman is deemed to have married Suvarchala , the daughter of the Akaasha raaja and rules the kingdom of Sumeru ( of today's middle east countries ) and has the camel as his vaahana which is evident from the numerous statues of camels installed in the temples of Hanuman. All the three words - Lakshmi , Saraswati and Shakti also have the meanings of divine halo i.e. tejas .

So as many stories as they are available they go forth in spreading and retaining atleast some amount of bhakti , even if they are confusing.

"|| Sri bhAratIramaNa mukhyaprANANtargata Sri KRuShNArpaNamastu ||"
