Purandara Dasa in the famous "chandra chUda shiva shankara pArvathi ramanane ninage namO namO........karadaLi vIneya nudisuva naMa uraga bhUshananu nIne " has used these words.

The name of the Veena Shiva plays is called Pinaki - which is why he is called Pinakapani.
The name of the Veena Goddess Saraswathi plays is called Vallagi.

I think pinaka (पिनाक) is the bow of Lord Shiva.
Of course vallakI (वल्लकी) means veena. But IIRC kacchapI (कच्छपी) is the name of the veena of Goddess Saraswati.

Extracts from: Deivaththin Kural:-
(Page 74 of http://www.krishnamurthys.com/profvk/go ... 71-75.html)

‘VipanchI’ means Veena. ‘ParIvAdinI’ also means Veena.

The Veenas belonging to particular celestials have particular names. Narada’s Veena is called ‘mahatI’. That of Tumburu is ‘KalAvatI’.

Saraswati’s is ‘KacchapI’. The word ‘kacchapa’ means tortoise. The drum of Saraswati’s Veena is in the shape of a tortoise. Hence it is called ‘kacchapI’.

Lord Shiva playing Veena ?

In Tyagaraja's "Mokshamu kalada" (Saramathi), Tyagaraja says "Veena Vadana Loludow Siva Mano Vidhamu Erungaru"....
To translate this into English, at a very very high level: people who dont appreciate music will not gain the blessings of Lord Siva, who (Lord Siva) gets "lost in time" while playing Veena.
This is good proof to show that Lord Siva plays Veena.

Dear Rasikas,
Thanks for the photos and the lovely discussion on Shiva and his playing on the vina.
I have always marvelled at the level of thought in our mythology: what incomparable conception of our god playing the flute, or vina, or damaru, and dancing! Music (and hence dance which is music expressed in motion) is in my opinion the highest form of creative expression. And we describe Brahman as 'Nada Bindu'!
Jai Ho. An Internet picture of an ancient temple sculpture of Shiva on the Vina:

IMHO there is no specific name for Lord Shiva's vINA.

ShivA is called 'vINAdhara' or 'vINAhasta'.
'vINApANi' refers to nAradA.

In this pose Shiva is known as Veenadhara (translated "Veena Player"), the Lord of Music. A title he borrows from Saraswati. In most Veenadhara sculpture of Lord Shiva the veena is absent. This is a rare treat to have Shiva playing his veena! Shiva in this pose is a slender young man. Please see the link below....

... Veenadhara (translated "Veena Player") ...
The commercial site makes a casual reference.
'dhara' does not mean 'play'; it means hold/carry/wear, etc.

Though 'Rudra' is one of the forms of Shiva, the world 'rudra' also means 'roaring'. So, 'Rudra-veena' may simply refer to a particular type of veena!
