A Delightful Experience

It was a pleasant evening and the rasikAs were eagerly waiting to listen to some divine music. The hall was well decked up for the occasion and gave the sense of intense positivity. The artistes for the september concert were Aishwarya Vidhya Raghunath (vocal) accompanied on the violin by Charulatha Ramanujam and Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma on the mridangam.
The concert began with the rendition of the auspicious sri rAga varnam “sAmi ninne” and all the artistes warmed up quickly. The transition from sri to vijayasri rAga was seamless with the ThyagarAja’s old time favourite “varanArada” rendered with some brisk swaras. A wonderful song that has lost currency of late and credit to Aishwarya that she brought this right up at the beginning of the concert.

The stage was now set for a classy delineation of shuddha dhanyasi with the emphasis on the tranditional gamaka laden gAndhara. Charulatha’s return was equally mellifluous and dipped in classicism. ThyagarAja’s masterpiece “enta nErchina” in madhyama kAla was rendered neatly and the concert opened up with a depthy nereval at “parahimsa” followed by well organized swaras. As the concert gained the rhythm, it was time to pace it down with a leisurely rendition of the Ahiri masterpiece of Shyama Shastri “mAyamma”. The handling of the nishAda was beautiful and the effect was enhanced by the masterful strokes of Ananthakrishna Sharma.

With the pace settling down, what better a rAga than sahana at this stage ! The rAga rendition was masterful with all the jeeva swaras of the rAga being highlighted in the right measure. Charulatha explored the rAga in her own distinctive style. A rarely heard kriti of ThyagarAja “raghupate rAma rAkshasa bheema” was rendered with aplomb.
After a quick “mAkelara vichAramu” in ravichandrika rAga, it was the turn for the main rAga of the evening. The positivity in the environment that got heightened with a flow of divine music was the right stage for tOdi rAga. Aishwarya was in her elements as she elaborated this rAga in all the three sthayis in different kAla pramAnas. The laya in the rAga was well maintained throughout which enhanced the overall appeal. It was then the turn of Charulatha for the return. She brought all her experience to the fore to paint a wonderful picture of the tOdi rAga. The less heard masterpiece of ThyagarAja “Koluvamaregada” was the song chosen with a nereval and swara prastAra at “srikaruniki”. There was a good blend of melody and math in the nereval and kalpana swaras. What followed was a blissful experience of the tani Avartanam by Ananthakrishna Sharma. The masterly and melodious strokes brought out ingenious patterns in different kAlas. The main item of the concert was laden with all grandeur.

After rAgamAlika slokas, it was the turn to invoke Lord Krishna through Purandara dAsa’s “jagadOdharana”. The concert concluded with the suruti rAga utsava sampradAya kriti of ThyagarAja “Seetapathiki hAratire”

The rasikAs were treated to some soulful music that left everyone with a delightful experience.

The todi was truly "out of the world", inexplicably soulful and delightful, which one hears only from great masters.............it was wonderful to have truly wonderful accompanists -
The ambience was wonderful at the venue, and obviously this sabha is a true 'rasika's delight'! It was truly nice to see 2 little children squatting on the floor - (I understand they are Sumitra Nitin's disciples) - shaking their heads in appreciation during the todi alapanai at all the "right places" and even indicating the "place of the eduppu"!!! Wow!!!
