Good soukhyamAna concert, , no frills. Nice pallavi - not very long about 30-35 mins... but had all the stuff in a good measure. Accompanists were good.

13 would be Villinai Otha Puruvam Valaiththanai Velava -- kavadi chindu style, made famous by Smt MSS in her recording for Sankara Netralaya.

Sounds like a very characteristic MSS song list.

What ragam is that kriti in? seems to be a gowrimanohari janya - sgmpns, sndpmgrs!

My best guess is " Velavali", a folksy derivative of Gowrimanohari (typically only seen in kAvadi chindu songs). There are many versions of this ragam seen in folk tunes, with variations in the arohanam.

This is apt choice, since this song is about "velava".

REg Villinai otha- In spite of being an ardent admirer of MS music, I have to write this- This song which has come in Bharathiyar songs LP is no comparison to the rendition of VV Sadagopan.. In fact, some how I did not like the Bharathiyar songs LP and that is the only one record I do not have. The only song in that record which I like is Kalamam vanathil antha- Kavadichindu.

CRama: On the contrary, that is one of my favourite MSS albums! I cry (sometimes literally) when I listen to Karpaga Vinayaka kadavule potri and her soul-stirring Vande Mataram. But I agree with you that the best track on that album is "Kalamam vanathil..."

I suppose music can be very subjective in the kinds of feelings, memories and sentiments it evokes.

Unfortunately, I have never heard the VVS version. Is it available in the public domain or even commercially?

GV is a bright star on the firmament of CM. She has the potential to become an all time great. Who said CM is dead after ARI, SSI, MS, DKP, MLV? Such people should listen to GV, Amrita Murali, Aruna Sairam, Sanjay etc. CM's horizons are growing and we have never had it so good.

I see that Sri VVS used the original kAvadi chindu mettu. Dr S Ramanathan and his descendants (Unnikrishnan, Sowmya etc) use this tune as well (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRPmXCr2wPU)

Why should I sneak past anyone. Everyone has a place here. And I am not amused by smileys. Relevant to my postings on the sahitya thread I posted here appreciating GV and also criticised those said that CM was dead after the seniors. If this was not fanaticism enough, there are still those, a miniscule minority though, that only the Dhanammal family sang/played great CM. What a joke! Look at the Dhanammal family thread in 'Vidwans and Vidhushis' Index. How certain snobs have posted, as if no other musician or style mattered! See my posts in the sahitya thread.
