The sahAna varnam , Ravi kiran’s own composition gave a subtle hint that the concert is set to an evocative and emotive mood rather than a boisterous gala. After an entrée in vijayasri,he paid soulful musical tribute to Oothukadu Venkata kavi, whom he has resurrected by extensive research .Ritigowla was the sentimental raga and the composition was enna punniyam seydheno in which venkata kavi salutes his unnamed guru and Ravi kiran appropriately chose this to express his implied salutations as well. The raga sayal clearly sparkled at every twist and turn and R.K supplemented by singing along. Brova barama was meant to bring a swift change. Gopala Krishna Bharathi’s enneramum undhan enabled the artist to reach and dwell in higher octaves which sound deliciously sweet in his unique instrument. The popular nagumo quickened the tempo. The main item of the concert was Kalyani who paraded herself in her majestic royal attire with sparkling pattu sari and pure gold ornamentations. The not so often heard birana brova of tharangambadi Panchanatha iyer was the master’s piece. Jubilant KV Prasad in mrudangam and Sivaramakrishnan on the ghatam dished out a brisk thani in Adi- tisra nadai. The javali fulfilled the sampradaya pattern and the eppo varuvaro in jonpuri had a telling effect which made the audience long for R K’s next visit eppo varuvaro.? After the tillana the “note” came sprightly with his touch of western music expertise. A raga malika in a Bharathi’s song was the only thing missing to make the concert as ideally perfect. But it was not RK’s fault as he openly invited the benumbed audience for any listener’s choice.

let me hasten to rectify an omission. Akkarai Subbulakshmi's violin accompaniment was apt and melodious particularly her kalyani alapana was very good. The volume was a bit low but it does not mean that she was hesitant.

Thank you for your review, Sri Ponbhairavi avl.
Sounds like a great concert, as Sri Ravikiran's concerts usually are. I have always loved his RK's treatment of Kalyani, epecially compositions like kamalAmbAm bhajarE.
I must confess that have never heard birana brOva as a main item (perhaps due to unusual gait of the tisra nadai). But I can see that this would have made the tani very interesting!
Can you recall what the kApi jAvali was?

The Javali may have been 'Bayera ... ' . I have heard Birana Brova a few years back in a vocal concert as main item - though I fail to remember whose concert it was. The concert definitely had a very interesting lineup of ragams --- Vijayasri , devangandhari , and main in Adi Tisram
