My impressions of the concert ....
Sangeetha Kalanidhi TV Sankaranarayan's concert was held under the auspices of GLAC in commemoration of Madurai Mani Iyer birth centenary . At the outset, TVS Sir announced that he would sing some of the compositions made popular by his uncle Shri Madurai Mani Iyer.
He started off with a viruttham on Vinayaka followed by a Periyasami Thooran Krithi in Saaranga followed by Swarams at Gananathane. Kshemam Kuru Gopala was rendered from the Anupallavi. Next Came Pantuvarali Alapana - Following the alapana - he narrated an incident about his uncle's rendition of this song years ago.
I did not quite catch which year it was - But it was a concert at Hindu High School in Triplicane. Shri Madurai Mani Iyer was singing with Sri Chowdiah on the violin and Shri Palakkad Mani Iyer on the mridangam. At the charanam line Kapi Vaaridhi, Shri Mani Iyer held onto the "N" - the Nishadham swaram for quite some time. At this point a big monkey appeared above the window of the 2 story building. The accompanists had stopped playing and the audience watched the monkey in awe surprised at the timing of its appearance (Kapi in the lyric referring to Sri Anjaneyaswami). It then disappeared after which Shri Mani Iyer went on to the Shadjam Swaram.
Shri TVS Sir was overcome with emotion on narrating this incident. It was nice to have had a first hand account of this incident from Shri Madurai Mani Iyer's illustrious career on the occasion of his centenary celebration concert.Shri TVS Sir said he would try to emulate his uncle's sense of proportion in concert rendition and highlight the popular sarvalaghu method of rendering swarams.
The Panthuvarali krithi itself was rendered very nicely with Neraval and swarams at the Kapi Vaaridhi line. Then came Samajavaragamana in Hindolam. Although it is an oft heard krithi on the concert platform, there was a certain freshness to it. While rendering swarams, the sarvalaghu method shone through.
Sakala Graha Bala in Atana was rendered as a quick filler before launching into a alapana of Mohanam. I believe everyone would have guessed at this point that the main krithi is going to be Kapali - once again made famous by Shri Madurai Mani Iyer. The Krithi and swarams were rendered very well. I actually enjoyed listening to Mohanam on the concert platform - I can't recollect a concert in the last 5 years which I attended where mohanam was rendered. My only gripe was having to listen to 2 audava/audava raagas(pentatonic scales) in quick succession.
Sevikka Vendum Ayya in Andolika was rendered in a fast manner. Then came a short pallavi in Kapi - once again made popular by Shri Madurai Mani Iyer. Kapi Alapana was rendered beautifully by Shri TVS Sir. The Pallavi was short with ragamalika swarams in Behag and Sindhubhairavi (Shri TVS mentioned that these 2 ragas were among Shri Madurai Mani Iyer's favorite ragas).
Shri TVS then launched into a viruttham in Yamuna Kalyani followed by Krishna Nee Begane baro - The song and the viruttham were rendered very beautifully capturing the essence of Yamuna Kalyani. Eppo Varuvaro and the english note (much expected) which followed were the final few pieces before the mangalam and the Vaazhiya Senthamizh and Vande Mataram.
Vittal Ramamurthy's violin playing followed Shri TVS Sir along like a shadow. His swara repartees matched Shri TVS note for note. Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam's playing was very good but loud at some times especially during the thani.
The audience turnout was good with mostly a middle aged to senior population. I did see some youngsters in the audience - The youngsters who could not make it missed out on a golden opportunity to learn some lessons firsthand.
There were some audio disturbances throughout the concert despite audio testing prior to the concert.
After 3 hours, when the concert came to an end, the audience erupted on their feet to give a standing ovation to the team and to Shri TVS - the torchbearer of the great Madurai Mani Iyer School. A befitting tribute to the legend!
