Raga banumathi...

Post by venkatakailasam »

I searched for a thread for this raga.. could not find one..

understand that This is the old name for the 4th mela Vanaspathi according to Dikshitar school of music. There is a janya raga by this name derived from the 4th mela Vanaspati. This is shadava sampoorna in nature and is a vivadi raga. Svaras taken by thus raga besides Sa and Pa are Sudha Ri^ Sudha Ga^ Sudha Ma^ Chatusruti^ Kaishiki Ni^ Minor raga with few known compositions. It was Dikshitar who popularised this raga by composing 3 kritis.

Dikshdar's composition on this raga...kshatra Thanjaur...

bhAnumati is the 4th mElakarta of the asampoorna mEla system. Muthuswami Dikshitar has composed 2 songs in this rAgA.

guruguha swAmini bhaktim karomi by R Vedavalli - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVph_aX1loU

A different version by T M Thiagarajan : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkHZhh3UOrE

brhadambA madAmbA(from someone's personal recording) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxzjr8hpvHg

As to the exact handling of this rAgA, I have some questions. Ignoring the vanaspati converted versions, Vedavalli mAmi seems to sing the scale like : S G1 R1 M1 P D2 N2 S -- S N2 D2 P M1 R1 S in guruguha swAmini. Not only that, S R1 M1 is also possible. But in brhadambA madAmbA, one sees both M1 R1 S and M1 G2 R2 S as well.

This has also been used sparingly by Thyagaraja in pariyachakama as well. Phrases like P-S and S-M are also found in Dikshitar's phrasing. What is the notation as per SSP?

Also the title should be changed to bhAnumati.
