It was a very nice concert, though i had to leave after the wonderful thani. I personally would have preferred at-least the thavil without mikes.
Begada was enjoyable and i thought the krithi was Sivan's "bhuvanESwari pAdam ninaindhu"....

Interestingly the pallavi in "Gana rasamudan" and "Bhuvaneswari padam ninaindhu" have such a similar structure!
Hard to tell apart in an instrumental rendition.
Thanks, Srikanth & Arvind!

Semmu, perhaps you didn't notice, but some time during the vAcaspati, the amplification was reduced or even done away with for the mic kept very close to Sri Palanivel's tavil.
Credit is due also to Mr Shekhar of Naada Inbam, who handles the PA system there. It must be delicate work to conduct a nAdaswaram concert and record it in the hall.
Perhaps having more people in the audience would have helped in the task via sound absorption.

Srikant and Arvind, thank you for attending the concert and for your reports.
The bEgaDa kriti was bhuvanESwari pAdam ninandhu indeed. I received parts of this concert and enjoyed it - there is a unique approach to ragas in the nAdaswaram that is very refreshing. For instance, the nAdaswaram manner of playing brighas in ragas like bEgaDa is unlike anything we hear vocally or in other instruments. I especially liked the gowLai and bEgaDa in this concert (didn't get to listen to rAma bAna and the vAcaspati). While the sAvEri alapanai by Sri Kothandaraman was thorough, during fast exchanges, his accompanist hit the R2 instead of R1, which was jarring.
There was a pretty abysmal, but sadly par for nAdaswaram, turnout of about a dozen, but it is not disheartening: this is precisely the sort of music and musicians we want to promote! Kudos to Sri Kothandaraman and his team for such rich musical fare to inaugurate the memorial series. I will try to contact him to see if I can post a recording or two.
