Harikamboji is the 28th melakarta raga. Harikamboji was the fundamental scale in the panns of ancient Tamil music (the equivalent of the raga system) where it was called Sempaalai. Harikamboji’ s prominence today is however credited to composer Tyagaraja, whose numerous gems in the raga are among the best known compositions in the raga. This programme includes a few of the lesser known ones and many composed by post-trinity composers. Listen on www.radioweb.in

The kshetra kritis of Syama Sastri, composed at various shrines that he visited, are not discussed nearly as much as those by the other two of the trinity. There are kritis that Syama Sastri has composed on deities at temples in places such as Tiruvaiyyaru, Madurai, Kanchipuram, Pudukottai, Vaitheeswarankoil and Nagapattinam. The popularity Tyagaraja’s kritis often makes one blind to the fact that the raga that it has been composed in is a rare one. A composition like Naada Tanum Anisham, with its immediate recall of Madurai Mani Iyer whose recording ended up making the song a byword - few people realize that it is probably the only known kriti in that raga. Presenting a few such compositions, both well-known and not so well known, of Tyagaraja. Listen on www.radioweb.in

Compositions of the trinity, with highlights of different compositions and aspects of these kritis. We are so familiar with Tyagaraja's composition, Brova Bhaarama, that we don't realize that it isn't all that common a raga, though it is very popular because of the kriti. There are also dozens of compositions that are remarkable for both their aesthetic and technical finesse but are not really popular. This programme features a few of these "special" compositions of the Trinity.

Music, along with theatre and the movies, has always been one of the most popular and persuasive methods to spread social and political ideas. Classical music was the pre-eminent form six decades and more ago, and it was natural that musicians and composers of the time were influenced by the freedom movement, and some of their songs reflected this. Featuring songs by musicians and composers whose work reflected their involvement with the nationalist movement. Mahatma Gandhi, who himself was drawn to the music in bhajans, also had his personal favourites among both music and musicians.
