My Track of the Day!

Post by Rsachi »

Dear rasikas,
How about a theme: My Track of the Day!
Here we can share what we heard today, and got happy about. More tracks from more rasikas, the merrier!!!!!

Here is my track of the day:
http://is.gd/l7QNvr

Ramani, MSG, Raghu....Enjoy!

Important postscript: sharing of commercial/copyrighted tracks will create endless issues, so I intend sharing only tracks in the public domain or from my own resources. Hope others will do likewise.

In case of copyrighted tracks, one can perhaps give references and comments and refrain from actually sharing the audio/video. But pointing someone to its availability itself will be a nice thing!

Nice thread. Many times I share the joy of listening some good concerts with my friends over phone.
In 2011 Rasikas Meet Ms Radhika Rajnarayan gifted a Cd containing some good concerts to all the members. Today I heard a Chitti babu concert from that. An exquisite Ganamurthy- with raga alapana and swaram.
From the same CD, yesterday I heard a MSG concert from the same CD starting with Sankarabharana varnam. Excellent.

Listened to T M Krishna on Carnatic radio. It was his Oh Rangasayee album, and my pick were Ranganayakam in Nayaki and a rare Mangalaksisiki kriti, Sri Bhargavi badram of MD.

I listened to Bhavayami by both Ramnad Krishnan and also MD Ramanathan both are unique in their own way...

I also listened two of MD's compositions..one brhadAmbA madambA jayati-Raga bhAnumati rendered by V Pradeep Kumar

and another one by Gayathri Girish-Ekamranatheshvarena-Chaturangini ...

Both the above are rare ragas..

I do not know how many are aware of harmoniam player Uraiyur Kather Batcha playing Saravana Bhava Guhane Vaa...

Dear VKailasam,
yes, that MMI Kalyani RTP is SO good...I think it is Lalgudi and Raghu. right!?
My idea for 'My Track of the Day!' was that one would suggest ONE track.,. But for someone as good and generous as you, maybe we make exceptions!
By the way my track for today... makelara vicharamu by Nagaraj Manjunath in the Puttu Rao concert we uploaded last night. listen to it please! the link here: http://is.gd/SgYYc6

I think the mridangam artist for MMI's RTP is Palani. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

My track of the day: a fine Kalyani Himadrisute by Bellari Raghavendra on Blr 100.1 FM. He has a very happy singing style aided by a beautiful male voice reminiscent of heyday Balamurali and Seshagopalan.
He was accompanied by an MSG-inspired violinist who did well.
Raghavendra also sang Karnaranjani, Mohana, Kuntalavarali Tillana, and some dasarapadagalu with orchestral accompaniment. No accompanist names were announced.

Rsachi:

I also listened to this concert of Bellary Raghavendra this morning. Violin accompaniment should have been Mysore Nagaraj and mridangam likely by Tumkur Ravishankar.

For some inexplicable reason, the announcers in Amrutavarshini, FM 100.1, often miss out giving details of accompanying artists.

S. Prasanna.

A sparkling Kalyani (as delightful as the Perrier from Vergèze) in Nija Dasa Varada by the one and only Mandolin Shrinivas, which I was referred to by good friend Dr. Ravi...

Regarding post12 , the Sogasu Chuda tarama piece by MMI with Lalgudi is superb. Lalgudi accompanying MMI meticulously during the manodharma swarams and with Lalgudi's embellishments , it is a perfect example of a great vocalist with a master violinist in perfect unison. This can be played during MMI centenarary programme for illustration.

Today, I've been going crazy over this piece by KVN with VVS/Raghu from 1967. marulu konnadirA. The second sangati on "mAnini maNi nipai", is just dripping with khamas.

Thought I would share it here: http://soundcloud.com/ramesh-balasubram ... ghu-marulu

Dear Mahavishnu,
Yes, one of my favourites too! I have heard KVN sing it so many times, with the same charming touches.

i think this track is from just after VVS joined KVN and Raghu for a stint in US after his accompaniment at the MSS UN concert.

There is another KVN Behag 'Saramaina' from an AIR concert with TNK and PRR. Same great stimmung.

By the way. I love the way Raghu used to embellish chranams, notice the touch here around 2:50.

I will look and find a way to share the Behag track...same masterly touches by both my favourite musicians KVN and Raghu.

Thanks again!

GMohan and Kapali.
Yes, lovely sogasujuda. MMI seems to be in a brisk mood, 1/3rds into the concert perhaps.
Did you notice the sparrows? Lots of them throughout.
I am imagining a lovely somewhat open air auditorium with the evening full of active sparrows in the trees, maybe flowering mango trees....

Yesterday night I listened to a wonderful Sankaracharyam by Chembai, while searching for the varnams which I have uploaded. It is in an Academy concert, iwth TNK and PMI. Wonderful with his special swara patterns. It also contains an excellent Giripai. A concert to linger in mind for many days .

Chembai 's rendition of Ennil Kanindha -Sankarabaranam is out of the world. (listened more than a year back; still fresh in my mind).
What a clean voice; must have been recorded in the 1940s; gives me a glimpse of the musician that he was and one can imagine Chembai voice in the 1930s.

Thanks mahavishnu, the Khamas simply lifted me out of an otherwise dreary day battling powerpoint presentations!

My ambrosia-for-the-day is DKP & DKJ singing Somasundareswaram: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcIxwgEBnG4

Will also add this quaint recording of Abdul Karim Khan singing Rama Ni Samana Evvaru. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hp1-HgUVGNM
Perhaps a fellow rasika's style of Hindustani-ising reviews would be most apt here! ;)

Rsachi and gmohan,
Reg post 18 , the sounds of birds chirping heard during the Sogasujuda tarama song is because the concert was held at Prasanna Ramamandiram during Sri Ramanavami festival ,Mysore portions of which were relayed by AIR, Bangalore sometime around 1961 or so. In the same AIR relay of the Mysore concert the sound of birds chirping can also be heard in the Niravadhisuka song where again the duo of MMI and Lalgudi excelled in unison. Incidentally the recording quality is very good. From which source gmohan was able to get this song link ?

Sachi sir,
Post #7 - Are you referring to the concert that is available on youtube held at someone's residence in Adyar with TNK and VR as accompanists?

If that is the one - I couldn't put talam for most part of that kriti

Looks like MDR has mastered that kriti in that (teasing for me) kAlapramANam

What an absolutely wonderful piece of creative music! I am sure the MMI 'maddies' will include these two in their best selections.
Did you notice a very appreciative+vocal rasika/fellow-musician's aahs and oohs throughout!?
PS: A million thanks to MMI, I just rediscovered this Thyagaraja masterpiece for its lyrical beauty and poetic import, apart from its musical excellence!

My track of yesterday.
As the concert progressed to the Thukkada section on my car audio , I had an urge to switch to the next track. The Police Guy , manning the traffic , signal made me dither for a minute . And by the time I could put my finger on the buttoon something happened . What started off as a Hindolam piece had lightening bolts of Jog Kauns . And then , everything , till Pavamana announced the end of the concert ,was ethereal .

Lovely treat from a scholarly innovator musician. Long time since I had heard Srirangagadya or Dr Nagamani... Many thanks!

I will savour the mood for some more time....and switch to MLV later in the day.

PS: This thread is bringing up such lovely tracks and moods shared by connoisseurs in the true spirit of Rasikas.Org!!! What started off as a light afternoon snack is becoming a multi-course dinner.

Dear Varsha,
Lovely treat from a scholarly innovator
For just a while ( the teeniest , weeniest bit of it ) I thought you may be referring me . :o
But then , sigh , I am no musician.
Nagmani Srinath's music often leads us to searching for more in MLV land . That is a fine compliment to her artistry.
I wish I could lay my hands on Nagmani Srinaths Music -( say about 30-50 concerts ? )in her prime
Any Mysoreans listening ??

Accompanists - I meant UKS but typed VR...as at the time of writing the post I was looking at a photo of MDR with VR.

I listened to Triloka mAta this morning and tried putting talam....and tripped yet again :^)

KVN Thaye Yashoda

I referred to this some time back when talking of Abhishek Raghuram's Unnati concert last August. Listen to KVN's words, and the great mridangam ( i suspect it is UKS!) The entire concert is great, with Hindola, Sriranjani etc., but it took some doing even to get this track audio level right while digitising from the old unmarked cassette on a humble player to my PC. So.

Hope you like it, rasikas!

Shyamala Dandakam by Mahakavi Kalidasa sung by DK Pattammal
Dear Rasikas,
Considering that Shyamala Dandakam by Kalidasa is (in my opinion) an unmatched prayer to Devi=Saraswati in Sanskrit for its imagery, poetic structure and phonetic beauty, and it has been sung so well by DKP perhaps 5 decades ago, I have taken the liberty of putting together a You Tube video with the scrolling text and the track I purchased at flipkart.com
I hope this is a good Navaratri treat for many.
Thanks

are you sure it is on Sarasvati....? It refers to the dEvi as mAtangi, jaya matanga kanyA etc, which is clearly a reference to pArvati...AFAIK, it is to SyAmaLA/SAradA...a version of pArvati with aspects of Sarasvati, with a vINA etc...like the deity worshipped by the SankarAcAryA of SRngEri SAradA pITham, and in the temple in Chennai.

rshankar,
This is not the first time we are discussing how "Devi=Saraswati" confounds categorization  : Kali(!)dasa has a lark describing the Devi. Just a sampler:

By the way the only allusion I missed in my reading thus far of this text is a statement that this Devi is worshipped by Saraswati. Hence I wrote Devi=Saraswati. Of course you would know better.
