In the first link ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL8H1q43vjo ) that Sri. Venkatakailasam posted, the host mentions about
the festival in Japan that is sort of similar to our Golu, called Hina Matsuri. I looked it up and here is some info on it along with the picture.
Yes, it looks similar to the south indian Golu.

Very pretty, VK!
Note the single digit number of tiers, as in an indian kolu (why golu?).

By koluviruthal, we mean that royal personage is in court for all to see.
This is bommaik kolu. Display of dolls.

VKailasam,
Enjoying the music you provide each day. Good to hear engaL muthu mAriammA from Ranjani and Gayathri. Bharathi's verse in place of an abhang!

The lines:
thuNi veLukka maNNuNDu
thOl veLukka sAmbaluNDu
manam veLukka vazhiyillaiyE
engaL muthu mAriamma!

resonates from our childhood days...

Arasi: Thanks. I remember people commonly calling it as Golu. Stand corrected.

This is an instance of the common mistake in Tamil between 'k' and 'g' and vice versa. I am very sure I say a lot of other such things wrong because of common usage until you language p(e)o(p)l(e)ice point that out ;) Now I am curious if I say it correctly as Kolu if someone is going to correct me or make fun of my tamil. That will be fun. Experiment on!

Please refer to the Thyagaraja's songs 1) koluvaiyunnADE and 2)koluvamaregAdA

That was what I meant too, giving it as an example for the word kolu. It's the same in telugu, as you say.

Japan and the Dravidian connection. There is both a cultural and language share.

A lot of words are shared between Japanese and the Tamil language, although the words have been slightly altered in the Japanese tongue. For a list of some shared words and other imports, read this article with a bibliography at the end :

Dear vasandagOgilam!
The problem will not occur if the words are written in Tamil script.
Using the Roman script is the problem.
A person having a cold wiil say 'golu' as will one who has mouth full of betel chew :D

I am so used to saying it as 'golu'. To me 'Kolu' sounds somewhat unnatural, although it may be right according to pundits.
