There have been controversies regarding the singing of the charanam line, 'samayAniki tagu mATalADenE' as refrain after every swaram and sahitya. Some point out that the refrain should be sAdinchanE itself, like how in the other four pancharatnams the refrain is the pallavi itself. I have heard that Lalgudi Jayaraman used to play the refrain as 'sAdinchanE'. Why is it different in Arabhi Pancharatnam alone in the accepted, popular version? Will be grateful if someone can clarify.

I have no idea about the history of how it came about. However, I prefer the refrain (of the pallavi) sAdhinchenE O manasA because of what it says--rather than the samayAniki line, simply because the former has more substance to it--words well worth repeating than the latter (which is just part of the description of KrishNA's many endearing ways as a child in gOkulam). Sweet sounding, of course, but the pallavi line is worth repeating many times.

A purely personal view...

archa, arasi, in the first place I believe it is sAdinchEnE not sAdinchanE. The former is plural since the song talks about 2 avatArs Rama and Krishna. The latter is singular. samayAniki tagu mATAlADane does not suit Rama since he is, as Thyagaraja himself has written, 'oka mATa, oka bANamu, oka patnivratuDai'. samayAniki tagu mATAlADane suits only Krishna, so one should not sing harE rAmachandra raghukulEsha........ samayAniki tagu mATAlADane as also other charanams which speak of Rama alone. It would be better and appropriate if every charanam is followed by sAdinchEnE.

The correct lyrics are " saadhinchenE, O manasaa !! " & " samayaaniki tagu maaTalaadene ". Kittappa's concept of plurality is wrong absolutely . Just to say it is singular or plural is not correct. The word " saadhinchenE " ( as well as maaTalaaDenE )is third person singular . The new convention of singing the pallavi as the refrain has been started very recently I suppose, that too by only a very recent vidwan like LGJ. We should not examine and analyse the purpose and language of yesteryears with mediocre knowledge of today. Why does kittappa think that Raama cannot talk or does not " talk appropriate to the occasion " which is the meaning of the Anupallavi.

That apart, Saint Tyagaraja saw only Raama in every avatar or creature of this creation - be it Krishna, Narasimha or anyone for that matter. Otherwise , how do you explain references to Raama in so many places in the musical opera Naukaa Charitram ?

Controversies apart Ariyakudi School believed singing Endharo or Sadhinchene briskly early in the concert. It gives a lively start to the concert & a sure shot for a successful concert. Now a days I don't find even leading artists singing these songs in the concert with the exception of TN Seshagopalan. Attached a link of KVN singing in one of the Music Academy Concerts.
