This song could be the famous "muruga muruga" by Periasamy Thooran. Sri TVS could have sung it from Anu Pallavi

Lakshman, Dubaimusiclover, Thanks for all the additions and corrections. Now for my observations. I arrived early from Santa Barbara for a 5 PM start concert. I had come with immense anticipation after reading Mahavishnu's observation of TVS's concert at Toronto. The concert after considerable delay for no part of the artists started at 5:42 after an extended, incoherent introduction by a gentleman who was all over the spectrum and very repetitive.
I had parked myself in the 4th row with complete view of the artists, hoping to enjoy unadulterated music. From the opening slokam to the kirtanam in Mohanam, TVS started of with a full throated voice, that needed absolutely no time to settle. The swarams in mohanam were a standard fare with nothing fancy, following the sarvalaghu patterns that he is so well known for. Saveri outline and the kirtanam was enjoyable.

The sub main Lathangi ragam was the highlight of the day for me. In true MMI fashion with all the brigas etc the ragam was majestically developed. The kirtanam Shri Venkataramana was about where the concert took a nose dive. I have heard this kirtanam many times with Vellore Ramabhadran, Palghat Raghu and Trichy Shankatran. Each of these artists have uniquely developed and embellished this kirtanam to capture the essence of the kirtanam. I now heard the kirtanam with Shri Baktavatsalam. This definitely was an exercise in pattern recognition, what with all the Tha thin Ki tha Thoms, Kitha Thaka Tharikitha Thoms and Dhin Dhinaka Dhin Dhinaka Dhins thrown it at every possible occasion.

I have over the years always been partial to laya than to bhavam. In the 90's I heard TVS with Vellore Ramabhadran and MSG when this kirtanam was expanded at length. Every mridangist has to take a chapter from this concert on the art of accompaniment. This concert is a music academy concert and is commercially available. From here on the Hindolam, the Khambhoji and the Kharaharapriya ragam etc were fairly mundane in its development and the artists were performing their part.

Every so often in life you recognize a gentleman or lady just by observation or a conversation etc. Shri Vittal Ramamurthy identifies himself as a distinguished gentleman not by talking to him or by observation, but by how he blends and emulates the main artist with his instrument. He followed like a shadow and although Hindolam did through him a curve ball he was able to hold his composure. I had the distinct feeling that he was not able to settle in through out the concert. Once again the feed back monitors were the culprit. Artists were having a difficult time hearing each other.

After an elaborate Kharaharapriya ragam, TVS started the majestic Chakani raja kirtanam. TVS had a difficult time deciding whether to sing in the higher octave or lower octave. After much agony, TVS confessed that when MMI sang this kirtanam, he (TVS) always sang in the upper Sadjam. Here he oscillated between the two Sa's and this of course took a toll on all the sangatis that this kirtanam has to offer.

Elaborate swarams was followed by tani avartanam. For me Dipawali came early with all the malapadakams and fireworks. I was expecting a lot more for having driven from Santa Barbara. Well you win some and you loose some. For me this was a loss.

A passable to okay concert. Nothing out of the ordinary. On my drive back to Santa Barbara, I listened to the Music Academy concert. with Khambhoji and Kalyana Vasantham RTP. My drive back was awesome. I do miss Vellore Ramabhadran and his unique accompaniment style.

Dear Aparna,

Guess Bharatiyar will pardon you for this damage for you have given a very valid reason that you were sleepy.. But still B and P keys are far apart! :P

Perarulalan,

Had nothing to do with the keyboard keys nor the fact that I was sleepy. Very sorry if I butchered the terminology. My knowledge of the language and the sahitya is limited to almost negligible. I write up the song names based on how I hear it. What with the amount of wax build up in my ears and a slightly distorted mike system, I must confess I heard it as a "B" as opposed to a "P"

Thank you for the correction. Sincere apologies to Shri Bharitiyar.

engaL
bAr adhil Adu ..

With no intention of offending anyone!
