nava rAthri 1st day.
To begin with,T.Sasidhar(KalAkshetra) plays the famous ShyAma shAsthry composition. It is from a concert I happened to attend in late 1980s.If I remember correctly,V.Thyagarajan and T.K.Moorthy were the accompanists.
http://rapidshare.de/files/33989079/sas ... i.mp3.html

recalling some wonderful nava rAthri seasons"¦concert by TVS at PAramEKAvu temple,Thrissur, in early 1980s.He sang marataka valli as main. That was a vibrant kAmbOji.20 years later, attended the same singer’s concert at the same place, the same ringing voice and kalyAni main(kamalAmba)
Some concerts at TTD T.Nagar,Chennai.I love that atmosphere, traditional way of sitting on the floor and they have a good sound system.I recall concerts of Bombay Jayashri and Aruna Sairam.
And three wonderful seasons 91,92 and 93 at the residence of Mr.Sundaram.I.A.S.If he or his family members happens to read this,I convey my thanks once again.
The concerts used to be held just outside the house, with a small temple attached to it, with an audience of 10 or 20 people.Attended concerts of Semmangudi,KVN,G.S.Mani,GJR Krishnan/Vijayalakshmi,U.Sreenivas,N.Ramani,Mala Chandrasekhar,Bombay sisters,Bombay Jayashri,Unnikrishnan,Alappuzha Venkatesan"¦
For Semmangudi’s concert G.S.Mani was present throughout.
G.S.Mani used to be a regular performer there.I remember his excellent rendition of sAmodam,SwAthi piece in Sudha dhanyAsi.
Rendition of Janani ninuvina by GJR/Viji ,especially the way they played the chitta swara, with all the essence of riti goula.
Wonder whether they have recorded those concerts.

Dear Radhakrishnan - that was an amazing treat indeed! My favorite singer, a great composer Subbaraya Sastry, and the classic piece Janani ninnuvina. What more could this humble rasika ask for??

I can still remember Shri Vairamangalam's kutcheri in Trivandrum many years ago, and how he smiled when I told him how much I admired his singing.

One small complaint though - the video clip stops abruptly, just when the swara singing was getting interesting. Any chance we can get the complete song? And while we are at it, I would be very interested in finding out how to get the whole concert.

Radhakrishnan, you are a magician! Earlier you gave us KVN, now this! What else is in store for us this week, I wonder...

My offering on Saraswati Pooje day :)

A recording of a saraswati stuti I sang at a Kannada literary event several months ago. It starts with a talk of about 1 minute.

Those who know kannada may answer the quiz at the end :)

Suji Ram,

One clue : It is not one, but 3 poems by three poets

All of them are pre-16th century poets.

mahA navami

two KVN tracks,

niNe naMinAnu AIR concert with MSG/UKS

http://rapidshare.de/files/35045491/KVN_thodi.mp3.html

The following track is incomplete, recording quality is not good, but such a moving rendition of mAyaMA . Ramabhadran shows how to play for the composition, maintaining perfect kAla pramAna with sarva laghu, using gumki brilliantly.

First of all, nice vAcana of the verses and singing of "varava koDu". Of the three, varava koDu is the famous song by kanakadAsa. The second verse is form the ever-popular karNATa bhArata kathAmanjari of kumAravyAsa. This is the saraswati dhyAna from the bhArata. It is in bhAminI ShaTpadi.

vArijAsane sakala SAstra vi- |
cAradudbhave vacana racanO- |
ddhAre Sruti paurANadAgama siddhi dAyakiye |
Sauru surapati sakala munigaNa |
sUrigaLignupamada yukutiye |
SAradeye nartisuge nalidolidemma jihveyali ||

The first one is a kandapadya. Iam not sure of the poet. Is it from SabdamaNidarpaNam of kESirAja? But the version you have sung, there seems to be an error as it is lacking one akShara in the second pAda. I have underlined it.

SrI viSadavarNe madhurA-
rAvOcite catura cira padaracane ciram |
dEvi saraswati hamsI
bhAvadi kUrtu nelegoLge manmAnasadoL ||

The part in question should either have three laghus or one laghu followed by a guru. No other combination is allowed.

Thank you for the special gift for Saraswathi puja.
DRS,
Thank you for vArijAsane. Another gift. I could only answer one of Ramakriya's quiz correctly--the easy one, of course...

Suji Ram, arasi, DRS.

Thanks.

DRS,

Good answers. varava koDu is by kanakadAsa. vArijAsane is from the pIThikA saMdhi in gadugina bhArata.

The first one is the mangaLa shlOka from kavirAjamArga, written by Srivijaya ( Also claimed as- by king Amoghavarsha Nrupatunga by some scholars) - which is the first available kAvya in kannaDa (~850 AD).

You may be right on the cAru-chira. This is what I sang from memory, and I did not have a reference to check. I might get access to the printed text next weekend when I attend another program at gOShThi - I will check then.

Vijaya dasami

Another track from Vairamangalam concert.Chose this track for this particular day for many reasons

Though not in the music field,I happen to be his student,so it is my guru dakshina.

Many rasikas here enjoyed his earlier tracks

In this track ,75 year old Vairam shows how to develop a rAga, step by step, note by note, which is an objective lesson to the music students

He was a devoted sishya ,done guru kula vAsam(he was known in TKR family as ambi) though TKR’s children are not in the music profession, they are all good rasikAs and for all important occasion like marriage, they used to arrange Vairam’s concert and it was a matter of pride for him to sing before TKR family.

He was a dedicated teacher.

gururbrahmA gururviSNurgururdevo maheshvaraH .

Happy Vijaya Dasami!

Dear Shri Radhakrishnan,

Thank you so much for making this a musically special Navarthri for all of us. The various recordings you uploaded for this occasion have been truly great - especially the Vairamangalam video clips.

The only small complaint I have is that the video clips were just 'clips', cut short abruptly. (I was hoping we would have the whole Sankarabharanam, but it was not to be.) Hopefully we will be able to get access to the full concert some day...

Again, many thanks and season's greetings.

Jayaram

Jayaram, though I would love to u/l the whole concert, those video files are too large,I am not a rich person finacially! Then, this is more of a music discussion forum, than a concert u/l site,so those small clips have more educative value.I shall give you the whole CD when we meet in person.
meena,I plan to visit Chennai early next year just after the season and will be meeting many people in the music circle to collect what all materials they have, concerts, lec dem, photos.I will be meeting TKR’s daughter also,if she has any video clippings of TKR,shall get it.
